  • Day 6...miserable

Hey fellow Atkin'sers. Im on day 6 of induction and am miserable!!! Absolutely miserable!!! Let me start off by saying that I never ate salads until induction. Since then I have been having a variety of salads. Everyday ive had green diarrhea (TMI, I know). It seems that my body is just not digesting it very well. Im going constantly and cant even go out without having to know where the restroom is. Problem 2: I am craving sweets extremely bad, I know I am not alone, so im comforted by that. Problem 3: TOM started a few days ago, blehh..'nuff said. Problem 4: I gained 3 pounds. I bought the Fitday PC software, and hated it the first day, now it is my new found love. There have been a few days where I realize at the end of the day that I dont get 20g of carbs. Im getting half of my carbs by vegetables, and im extremely bloated.

I'm *this* close to giving in and calling it a 'diet'. I know I have another week before induction is over, but the majority of the posts ive read have said that they lose like 5lbs in the first week.

Would someone please snap me out of this and tell me its going to WORK!! If you are one of those people who started Atkins thinking "nothing works on me" I would love to hear from you.

    Hi,
First of all I congradulate you on finishing day 5, to be honest I have no idea of your intestinal problem as I didnt have, but about cravings , it is my 13th day, in the first week cravings killed me ,as I used to eat a whole 200 gr chocolate every night,,,but after 10 days, I lost my appetite, now i dont like even to look at chocolate, it looks like I am looking at a piece of plastic,,,,,,,,,,
About the weight, I also didnt lose in the first ten days, the problem was solved by fitday, as it showed my carb from broccoli and ... are 40 grs a day!!!!!, I reduced it and I already lost another 4 lbs,,,,,,,so happy,,,,,,,,, fitday is an awsome program,,,,,,,just want to let you know I can relate to many of your problems,,,,,,and I hope you can solve it the way you like,,,,,,,,,

    cheers
    Babak

        Re: Day 6...miserable

Thanks for the responses. Thus far, here is what I had off the top of my head, in no particular order

        2 cup mushrooms
        2 slices turkey bacon
        4 tbsp butter
        6 oz cooked steak
        4 oz cream cheese
        3 cup lettuce
2 oz chicken breast (cut in strips for salad)
2 tbsp home prepared ranch dressing
        4 eggs
        1 tbsp mayo

I hope someone can help me with my menu too...its pretty bland, and I dont cook anything on the stove. Thanks for any suggestions in advance

          Re: Day 6...miserable

Congrats on completing 5 days - that's an achievement!

Try taking a supplement, L-Glutamine, that's supposed to really help with sweets craving. Remember, you're breaking your old habits, and it can be tough the first week or two (this is one of the reasons why Induction is so strict).

Glancing at your menu, your veggie proportions are off (see the links Georgiana so helpfully posted).

*Constant* potty problems suggests that you are eating something new that your body doesn't like - what new food did you add?

Is that lettuce iceberg? Try one more nutrient-dense like Romaine. And be adventurous - I found myself loving foods that I hated prior to Atkins. It's weird, your tastes change dramatically. Use salads as an opportunity to add in cucumbers, tomatoes, and other approved veggies to provide a bit of variety.

I also doubt you're eating enough calories in the day - eat too little, the body goes into starvation mode and you won't lose any weight.

If you're on TOM - don't count those pounds. Also, once it ends, MEASURE - and keep measuring - sometimes you lose fat and not pounds, especially if you are exercising like you're supposed to (I've "only" lost 13 pounds but I've lost a bunch of inches and two dress sizes in two months).

Hope this helps, and hang in there! Sometimes it takes a little bit to learn how to eat Atkins.

            Re: Day 6...miserable

hey all. Well, week one is over, and im up 3 lbs. Do you think it could be the veggies that are making me gain weight? I have realized they are off, now that Georgiana posted the link (thanks!) I am slightly still confused about the veggie rule though. If half of our carbs have to come from veggies, and we can only eat 3 cups a day. how does that add up to half? Ive had this discussion before, and thought I had it right, but obviously not. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks

There are lots of induction veggies that can add up to 10-15 carbs quick, such as tomatoes and leeks. I cook with dehyraded onion a lot and that bad boy can really add up fast!

You're eating iceberg lettuce, which has basically nothing much as far as any nutrition content at all, much less veggie carbs. Try romaine, or raw baby spinach.

Are you using Fitday? And are you eating enough calories and in the right mix?

How much sodium are you consuming? That might be making you retain water.

Are you still having digestive problems?

                Re: Day 6...miserable

Foe the past 3 days, ive cut out lettuce whatsoever, my digestive problems are 70% gone. I am using fitday and it seems I average between 1600-1900 cals/day. I thought that was kinda high. Sodium is in the 2000mg range. That doesn't sound good at all. And Im getting awfully bored with induction, I know its because I dont cook, but everytime im "hungry" I dont want to eat meats or veggies, etc. I guess thats not true hunger then? Then I get frustated and nearly cry.

                  Re: Day 6...miserable

Your sodium is pretty high. DOes Fitday say that your percentages are correct? They're supposed to be 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. 1600-1900 is a great range for calories. If you're still having TOM, the water could also be from that, so some people don't weigh at all during TOM...

Cut your sodium off! I had that problem in the beginning. You need to drink more water to flush it out if you still having more sodium. You're probably going to the bathroom all the time. You said you're hungry and don't want to eat meats nor veggies? WHY NOT? Starving yourself or not listening to your body is even worse. Eat whatever you want and let the scale do it. Watch the carbs and your veggies. In the beginning I eat a lot over 3k calories on induction and still lost weight. And now I'm eating less and still going. Stop worrying about these things and just do atkins. You got nothing to lose and you will see your changes. By the way, the cravings will go away. Trust me it was so bad for me in the first 2 weeks I was gonna quit. But now, I don't even want to go near sweets anymore. =)

I am glad that removing lettuce has improves matters, Huniebunny
At this stage of Atkins you don't need to worry abour restricting your calories - eat when truly hungry and you will be fine

Later when you are near to goal you might be one of the people who have to cut down but many of us don't have to count calories at all (except just out of interest).

You said you don't cook - is that because you can't cook (never learned how), or live somewhere where you have no kitchen access or because you have someone else doing the cooking?

I have seen many members who started out not cooking manage to start and even turn into great cooks by learning how after starting Atkins. Life would be much easier for you if you do cook even some of your food, as you will not be reliant on other people not adding things like starches and sugar to dishes and sabotaging you unawares.

Also you will then be the master of your own menus and be able to vary dishes in so many ways that even induction cannot be boring with all the possibilities! By not cooking you really are limiting your options.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                        Snap out of it!!!

Okay, so you feel lousy ... your body is getting used to a new way of eating and let's face it ... your body may be having difficulty processing the roughage.

Just drink lots of fluids. Stay away from the sweets despite hearing them call you. And make sure you are eating enough protein and fats.

If you need help with menus, post them and people will look at them to comment on issues if any. In the meantime, get a head start on the holidays and you'll feel better soon! It really does work ... trust me on that one!

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.
