    Hello everybody!! Hows everyone doing today? Coming to the end of day 6 and stuck with it even with getting on the scale this morning to a 5lb weight GAIN!! OMG its gotta be water cuz theres no way someone can gain 5lbs in a day!! So I'm thinking the sodium has alot to do with it. Last night I felt horrible!! Nausea really bad!! Anyone else feeling badly? I woke up and felt fine..I got some ketone test strips from a friend but I think they're too old they expired in 1998!! LOL Tried em anyway and there was no change in color!! Gee I wonder Why??? LOL When I break this 180 mark I'm gonna seriously pass out! I hope everyone is hanging in there and having a good weekend.

      Hi all
      I started Atkins 12/06/08 for the second time first time I lost 12 lbs then went on Vacation I plan to stick to it this time until June 2009. If neccessary. I work nights and it can be difficult to keep up with the meals so i tend to snack, but it is not a meal. Any night owls your suggestions would be very helpful.

        As long as you make sure your snacks are composed of fat/protein/carbs and not just things like cheese and meat I can't imagine not having 'proper' meals will make any difference.

        Try to spread your veggie carbs throughout the day to even out any 'blood sugar spikes' too.

          is anyone else having problems sleeping?? everyday around the same time i wake up and im wide awake.. i exercise to poop myself out lol.. i drink all my water before a certain so i wont wake up to go potty i cant figure it out..if its eating this way or something else going on but my bad sleeping starting the next day on plan.

            Hey Everyone!

            I am so glad to hear other people are not feeling well. Last night I felt so terrible, grumpy, and tired. I was not fun to be around.. I know it probably has something to do with being unable to go to the bathroom. It is now been 5 full days!!!!!!! I even went yesterday and bought the psyllium whole husks and took some yesterday and nothing yet. I know when I do I will probably lose a bunch of weight. THen to top it off, I got the ketone strips and it says I am not in fat burning. Please SOMEONE say something that will help me want to stick with this. At least with weight watchers I could eat what I want and go to the bathroom. I am soooooo FRUSTRATED!!!!!!!!! I am going to a cookie bake today and am soooo tempted to just throw in the towel!!!!!!!

            WOW....thanks for letting me vent!

              Whew, seems like today's been pretty bad for a lot of people. I just want to say first of all that if you're in the first week, stick with it--by the second week you should be feeling amazing!

              Denise--hang in there! Could it possibly be TOM? I know I gain about 7 pounds around then. But you're right, its impossible to gain that much fat overnight so its most likely water.

              Chica--welcome! Elizellen gave you some good advice. I'd add to make sure you have some veggies pre-cut to munch on.

              Skinny-A lot of people find that they need less sleep on Atkins than previously, but that shouldn't account for "bad sleep." I don't have any advice for you but I hope that you start sleeping well!

              Smile-If you're not in ketosis yet, you may want to try posting your menu to the "Review my Menu" forum: Review My Menu - Atkins Diet The experts here are pretty good at finding potential menu flaws you may not have considered.

                Thanks so much Holly!! I found myself totally relating to some of everyones issues, good to know I'm not the only one suffering!! LOL
                Its not TOM that was last week before starting the diet. I'm pretty sure it was my sodium levels. I've been sticking to it and I'm still at 180. I lost the 5lbs that I gained in the first 4 days so obviously thats water retention. I've got an appt with a personal trainer tomorrow so I'll be doing a targeted workout. I didn't measure myself last week in the beginning but I know I've lost inches, clothes fitting looser!! Gonna get measured tomorrow to track results better. I'm feeling better and I'm positive I'll have good results by next Sunday and the end of my 2 weeks.

                Question regarding alcohol-Is it ok to drink bacardi and diet coke since its zero carbs? I heard it was. If not is there a drink that is allowed. I'm going to a party next Saturday and wanted a couple cocktails. Could go without but wheres the fun in that??

                      Hi again everyone!

                      Thanks Holly for the advice. I am so sorry to sound like such a downer. I have to tell you, I was doing the ketosis strips incorrectly. I AM IN KETOSIS!!!!!!!!!! Wheeeep!! I have had the worst day, but I went to the cookie bake and the world's largest christmans bazaar and did not eat any sweets or bad stuff!!!!

                      BTW.....At one of the booths there were low carb items for sale. One of which was Sugar Free Dark Chocolate. The guy there told me you subtract the sugar alcohol from the carbs. Is this true? He said the sugar alcohol is not absorbed into your body, it just runs straight through. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks so much!!

                        Hi Denise
                        I just thought I'd pop in and mention the fact that if you do drink alcohol your body will use that as fuel before it burns any of the fat on your body or which you eat - so any losses will be delayed for a while. Also many members have found that having a little alcohol affects their decidion to eat according to Atkins rules - so be aware your resisance to temptation might be affected and be prepared to resist!

                        If you are following DANDR the time to see how alcohol affects you after induction is when you reach the 5th level/rung of the carbohydrate ladder in the second phase of Atkins (ongoing weight loss/aka OWL)

                          This is what the manufacturers say BUT . . . many people find that their body treats sugar alcohols in the same way as sugar and so they don't ignore the carbs from them

                          My personal rule is that if the sugar alcohols do 'run straight through' - evidenced by me having to spend long hours in the bathroom while this happens) then I can deduct the carbs from them, but if they do not give me the 'bathroom effect' then they are NOT 'running through' so I ought to count the carbs in them.

                          Your decision of course

                            hey everyone, hope all are doing well

                            Denisk - i have a office christmas party im going to, its like 2 days after my induction and i know people will be encourage me to drink!! i think its really up to you if you want to break the diet for one night!! i know it wont be much fun to go out and not drink but then will it be worth it the next day? will you be able to get right back on track!! im scared to say im not sure! so i think if i can will stick to water the whole night. (might pretend its vodka to everyone else) lol just kidding. whatever you do, have fun!

                            Smile - i have no idea about that sugar alcohol in the chocolate, but wish we had some low carb items over here to have a look over. So far ive had to stay away from sweets all together was so tempted to eat cake last night as my partner was enjoying a nice icing cake but i resisted thank goodness and feel so much better for it!!

                            Philliha - how did your little get together go the other night? sounded like a lot of fun! did you prepare some atkin friendly snacks for everyone so you wouldnt have to be careful and watch everything you eat?

                            Im on day 8 today!! im so happy!! i made it through my first week. The scales show i have lost about 10-11 lbs in my first week, i havent updated my stats though as i only want to do that once a week However i am not letting them get to my head as i know how easy it is to put the weight back on when im not being so careful. I am trying very hard to do more walking, did about a extra 30 mins walking each day over the weekend. Im at work today so will be moving around a lot hopefully that will do something lol.

                            Like i said before really wanted carbs last night in the form of cake. However i resisted and had a mini atkins binge (pre-prepared sausage/pork rinds/pepperami/cheese chips which i made myself) was very satisfying and great that i know i didnt cheat.

                            hope everyone is going strong!! keep it up!

                              Hello everyone! Thanks to elizellen for answering questions so wonderfully (as usual)!

                              Denise--alcohol is rung 5, so for a clean induction, alcohol is a no-go. That being said, if you do choose to indulge, stick to carb-free drinks like vodka sodas.

                              Jodi--the one thing I'd add is that sugar free chocolate sets off cravings for me so I avoid it like the plague. I can easily see myself sitting down to a bag of sugar free peanut butter cups. One thing that I am able to enjoy though is 100% chocolate. It was something that tasted awful and bitter pre-atkins, but now that sugar is out of my life, I can taste the sweetness in everything and I love a piece of pure chocolate as a snack.

                                I had to write and thank everyone! I am so thankful to this group and my sister who has been doing this for over 10 years. I am sticking with this and in a much much better mood then yesterday. I don't think I could have been in a worst mood then yesterday. Thanks for the support!!!!!
