  • Confusion...but its probably a very easy answer!

As part of your daily 20 grams of net carbs, you can also have the following – every day:
    • Up to 4 ounces of cheese
    • 10 to 20 olives - they make a great quick snack
    • Half an avocado
    • An ounce of sour cream or 3 ounces of unsweetened cream in your coffee
    • Up to 3 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
    • One to two servings of Atkins bars or shakes. Check the packaging to see which ones are right for Induction (less than 5 grams of net carbs).

Is this relating to you can have this ON top of your 20 net carbs? or included so youd have to find the net carbs of these items and include them within the 20?

    thanks

I believe that your 20 net carbs must INCLUDE anything on that list, so if you eat those items you still need to try to stay at 20 carbs per day.

Where is that list from? I cannot remember Atkins saying that you can have 2 shakes and 2 bars anywhere in DANDR. What you HAVE to have are 3 cups of vegetables. Most of your carbs should come from vegetables. Whatever else you add from the allowed list still have to make it under 20.

I would be careful with shakes and bars - they contain ingredients not allowed on induction and they stall some people. They also contain artificial sweeteners (you are allowed only three sweeteners per day)

Whoops, I didn't see that last part when I wrote my previous reply. Yeah, I would avoid the shakes/bars entirely until you get to the higher rungs of OWL. Use the 2002 copy of the book instead of the newer one for better info!

You have to count ALL carbs. The list of extras (like olives, heavy cream, lemon) is just an added variety of limited foods that can be added during induction, but yes... you must count the carbs in them. The website is not the best source of information as it is very different from what Dr. Atkins originally made it to be. Dr. Atkins book is the best resource!
