  • As silly as it seems..

So far, i have found the hardest part of this for me.. is licking the spoon of things that are no no's. Yesterday I made mac and cheese for my daughter and just about tasted it to see if it was "ok".. then i dropped the spoon and firmly told myself "NO!" Today I made some mashed potatoes for her for her lunch and when I went to stir them I went to lick the spoon clean.. but again caught myself. Licking the spoon or tasting things is just such a habit for me when I cook and old habits are hard to break. So, for me it is not just adjusting my eating habits per se.. but my cooking habits in general. But I've have been good and caught myself both times.
    Day two and doing great!

I even helped her make some brownies today and did not even touch a crumb! I am so proud of me! lol

I do this too when making stuff for my DH...............

I caught myself when it was in my mouth and spit it out in the sink and promptly rinsed mouth with running water...............

I was making cookies for my husband that needed to be frosted. I gave him some and he said they were terrible. I always had to taste as I go to make sure the flavorings and stuff is ok. Now I make sure someone is around that can do that for me

try sucking on a strong flavored mint while you are cooking. I like the little icebreaker balls that are filled with peppermint oil.

We had Fajita's the other night, and my brother who lives with us wanted a casadilla. I made one and MAN did it look good. I ate my filling with no shell. I could have scarfed the whole thing though.

For me being a mom and a wife while dieting is difficult. Making multiple meals and included in those are things I cannot have. Staying strong so far though.. just alot of habits to break.

              Hi Toeyann

Try and find meals that everyone can eat. Meatloaf is a good example (it's all about what you put in to it) - just make some potatoes for the family and, if possible, a legal veggie that everyone likes (broccoli?). Then, on your plate, a tossed salad. Last night I made Chicken Alfredo and broccoli - I ate the chicken and poured some of the sauce over my veggies - and I made some noodles for my hubby.

My point - many of the things we can eat, our family can eat and enjoy! Don't make multiple meals if you can help it!!

While I am dedicated to following Atkins 100%.. my hubby has decided to choose just a low carb life style. So many of the things I eat he does too. I do not, in general, make mutliple meals necessarily, but the extra addition of things i cannot have... ie: mac and chz or potatoes at request of my daughter. I do not mind making the additionals.. just need to not taste or lick the spoon! Although, on her own, my daughter already eats fairly healthy.. she does not eat alot of breads and stuff.. her weakness is apples! lol And like most kids... mac and chz. Otherwise, she is a salad and cheese eater and scrambled eggs has always been her fav for breakfast.

Toeyann, I know exactly what you mean! I always want to lick the spoon or taste test things I make in my house! Not necessarily because I want to eat it but because it is a habit or I want to make sure it tastes ok! I've gotten into the habit though of taking a spoonful to a carb eater for testing now! It was just really tough when I was baking for other people for Christmas and even though my bf assured me that things tasted fine but I just wanted to know for sure before I served it!

Havinabutterfly, I like the idea of having a mint in your mouth while cooking- that way I wouldn't absentmindedly taste things! Good idea!

Re: As silly as it seems..

I had this problem, too. Not so much licking spoons, but I can't stand to have anything icky on my fingers, so I lick them. I can't stand to touch a dish with sticky fingers, so I lick! I cook all the time (I'm writing a low carb cookbook) so it became quite a problem. I also cook a lot for church and family, so some of the licks are not Atkins friendly. Most of the time, now, I wear food handling gloves so I don't feel the icky stuff on my fingers.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Oh yes.. fingers are an issue for me too.. I hate the feeling. Now I keep a dish towel on my shoulder and when that finger comes near the mouth I see the towel out of the corner of my eye and wipe instead. Amazing the habits we have gotten ourselves into during cooking. All seems so innocent, but my scale disagrees.
