  • I feel like crying...

Today is the 14th day of the healthiest eating in my entire life. I have been drinking my 64 oz (usually more) water a day, I excercise at the gym every other day - doing the gazelle thingy for 30 mins then jogging for a mile. Usually there is stretching involved before and after and occasionally some weight lifting.

I've been really good at keeping under 20 grams of carbs, eating only the approved induction foods.

Today I weight myself and I gained 1 pound since I started. I weighed myself before induction, 215, 14 days later I'm at 216.

    I don't get it.

The only thing I can think of that would explain this is that I am on birth control. However, I'm not taking it just to control my cycle so I'm not going to stop taking it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't plan on stopping atkins. I have true faith that this will work. I am definitely going to do induction for another week and see what happens then.. but I am just sad!

I know I've lost inches because I have visible cheekbones again. My clothes fit better. I have to wear my belt tighter. Where in the world did this 1 pound come from?

    Or am I just overreacting?

          Hi Spazzy! :wave

Please make an appointment to have your Thyroid checked - the condition known as "Hypothyroidism" is fairly common over 5 million Americans have it and it effects 10% of the women in America.

Don't be alarmed! It's easily treated through medication but left un diagnosed it can lead to greater problems.

This may or may not be the reason your metabolism is running so slow, so make an appointment with your Doctor and/or ask for a referral to an endocrinologist.

A blood test will determine whether or not your thyroid is the problem, if it is? no need to despair because again it's easily treatable.

Here's a link to a site that may help you out a bit:

Keep us posted - and make that appointment!!

i'm surprised at how no one mentioned the fact that she has lost inches, which is great!!! your clothes are fitting better, infact gettin looser! why be so upset? thats enough of a proof that this WOL is really working for you, and you gaining a pound could be the result of you going to the gym working out and building muscle (with both cardio and weight training) and as you know muscle weighs more than fat, so jus concentrate on the fact that you ARE losing...and jus keep going, soon those pounds will also start to drop as soon as your body gets used to this WOL and the muscles that you are building will help to burn more fat!! so KEEP GOING!
i can do it, i can chnage myself, i can make my dreams come true!!

Not to worry!! I am also thinking you have gained muscle. If you gain more muscle than you lose fat, the scale will reflect a gain but you will look better! The scale is very evil and it weighs your entire body, not just the fat. If you are doing everything correctly, then don't panic. Perhaps up your water a bit. All that exercise means you need more than just the recommended daily amount. I am positive if you drink 32 oz more in the next few days you will have a whooshie!

Peter, although you mean well, she is only 21 years old, and hypothyroidism isn't likely at her age. BUT your advice is very pertinent to older folks! So thanks for the reminder.

I understand about taking the pill for reasons other then BC and yes that can cause fluid retention but if you have been on them already then you know this. How close to the end of your cycle are you or do you take a break as this can effect fluid volume retention too.

The fact that you have lost inches means your body os morphuing on your Atkins andthat is a good thing. you are burning off those large bulky body fat stores and building more lean body tissue, but alsa the metal monsters only can detect a change in our total mass relative to the force of gravity. This is why we say make friends with your tape measure so you can see the inches of body fat melting off as your body adds lean tissue and holds water for complicated bio chem reasons that we all go through in our weight loss journey. We plump up with fluids to save shape for complicated biochem reasons when we lose fat, we plump up with fluids when we start a new execise program for speicies survival gene issues. all of which can frustrate the heck out of good Atkineers to the point some of us worship the Whooshie fairy and plead for her to come remove those fluid pounds. you will see yours released soon too.

Hang in ther happy low carbing

As to the hypotyriod issue actually it could apply to our poster as estrogen creates more protein bonding sites in the blood stream for the thyroid hormones to attatch so it is not free to move into the cells where it is needed. Blood test results for low thyroid would be normal while cellular level would be deficent

G-Mom, Appreciate your post but your incorrect Hypothyroidism effects people of all ages - even children (known as Junior Hypothyroidism)

Sazzy Again, my advice to you is heart felt and I encourage you to do two things, read the posts in the "Thyroid and Atkins Low Carb Living Forum" we have here on the board.

And make that appointment with your Doctor!...remember none of us here are qualified to give you medical advice. Even if the chances of Thyroid related problems may or may not be an issue for you - it's imperative to check in with your Physician, raise these concerns, have the appropriate blood work done (a full blood panel..it's a simple test) and in this way you'll know exactly what obstacles may or may not be in front of you - and of course how to best get past them without hurting yourself.

Keep us posted and Keep the faith! :joy

Peter, I really don't want to get into an argument with you, but my post said that hypothyroidism isn't likely at her age. I did not state that it was impossible, however, it is very rare for children and young adults to develop the condition. Spazzy needs to check for the symptoms of hypothyroidism and then if she is concerned, then go to the doctor.

To jump to conclusions about this could cause undue stress for her. Spazzy, if you are concerned, then check your symptoms here: http://my.webmd.com/hw/health_guide_atoz/aa34887.asp, otherwise, keep up what you are doing and I am sure you will be losing pounds very soon.

Peter, please don't be upset with me, but I think you might be jumping to conclusions a bit.

thanks for all the great help and ideas everyone, I really do appreciate it.

I'm going to do induction for another week, prolly two and see how things go from there. i desperatly need to get a tape measure but always forget to get one when I'm at the store lol

I'm not going to discredit the thyroid thing, it is entirely possible. One of my friends from highschool had a thyroid prolem, had to take all these pills. It might have worked for her if she didn't couple those medications with an all rice diet... sigh..

If things don't change in like a week or two then I'll consult a doctor about my thyroid. I'm also seeing a doctor about my birth control, maybe I can get on one with a lower dose of estrogen see if that effects anything.

Thanks for all the help everyone, you guys truly are the best! :hug

                        Inches lost = weight lost.

Scales are evil. They don't tell you if you lost fat and gained muscle, or if you gained water weight.

Don't get discouraged. As I like to say, no one will know how much you weigh unless you walk around with a sign that says "Hi. Today I weigh _____ pounds." But they and you will notice that your clothes are looser and that you look thinner.

hi spazzy...try posting a menu or two anyway...sometimes there is an area that can hinder loss that you might not realize...you are seeing a difference so I wouldn't get too discouraged...some of the most successful people here didn't have much loss in the beginning.

I just saw that you did post your menu in a different forum...Pammie offered some great advice...you may want to experiment with dropping the cheese...some people including myself have trouble losing weight when we eat it...also I saw in a post you ate Induction pancakes...what were the ingredients in that?
