  • First weigh in (one week)

Well, I have been trying to keep my spirits up this week because I have not felt much different and I peeked at the scale on day five and had gained slightly. I stayed off the scale until this morning after a full week and I had lost less than a pound. I have been in ketosis since the morning of day 3 (when I bought the sticks) and have followed the plan precisely. No bars, no shakes, no nuts, under 20 net carbs a day. I have been very diligent and i supposed the ketosis shows that. I took measurements against my better judgement and they were exactly the same.

I am not looking for a miracle. I dont expect the amazing results others are seeing, but I do expect to lose something. Given what I have been eating and the ammount I have exercised, this really does not add up. It is discouraging, but more than that, a bit baffling.

    Any thoughts?

It says in the book and on here how the quick results are so motivating - it really keeps you going. Well, when the opposite is true it is really demoralizing.

Please post some menus for people to evaluate. You may not be eating enough.

Here is a pretty typical day:

3 egg omelet with 3 olives, 3 cherry tomatos, and feta - maybe some bacon, maybe not
leftover flank steak for lunch and a little cheese
asparagus with goat cheese wrapped in procuitto
      ceaser salad
chicken breast (or burger, or steak, or fish)

      snacks - 2 a day
mozzerella with some olives and olive oil
celery with creamy blue cheese dressing
      turkey roll up
      1 diet coke
      unsweetned decaf tea

Hmmmmm.... Have you been drinking enough water? Maybe your are retaining water from all the salty cheeses and prosciutt? If you are female, is it TOM? Maybe more salads/veggies? Does the blue cheese dressing have added sugar? What kinds of exercises have you been doing?

Definately enough water - way more than enough, actually. Nothing in the blue cheese (Maries chunky - great if you have not tried it), and as for the salad/veggies, I would love to, but I am trying to stay within the limits (2 c. salad, one c. cooked).

          Thanks though.

How much? You are not saying how much? 1 oz- 6 oz etc. I know that it is hard but you got to keep track of the amounts of each food.

I think based on what you said you might need to eat more fat for the time being. You are eating good though. You may need to eat a little more. Are you cooking your eggs in butter- eating mayo? The cheeses you are eating are all on the lighter side as well. Are you eating 3-4 ounces daily?

Maybe you can try to increase it the over all amounts (I know this seems weird) and see how you do? I know how hard it is to eat when your not hungry and part of being in Ketosis is loss of appetite.

Also I have done this a few times and have had slow first weeks and great second weeks. You will probably have a woosh very soon.

            Hang in there.

Generally when I eat cheese iti s 1 oz. at a time. I don't really keep track of the meat portion, but standard issue chicken breast, burger, ect. I do eat mayo, butter, full fat blue cheese dressing...

Anyway thanks for the encouragement. I will try to eat more. That is a little hard to imagine, but I will give it a try. I will just cry if I gain though....Maybe that is why I am afraid to increase the ammount I am eating. I will try.

maybe for now untill you start loseing weight try cutting out all the cheese from your diet and trade the cherry tomatos in for broccoli and dont eat any procuitto or bacon it can have suger and whats in your turkey roll up? and what snacks do you eat and whats in the ceaser salad?

and ya eat more fat it is your new main source of energy you need it for the diet to work get it from eggs oils fatty meats and such

and ya remmber to eat LOTS of food that will help your body do better on the diet exspeically during the start of the diet

and dont worry about gaining weight its basically impossible to gain weight when you eat 20 or less net carbs a day

                  Can I make a suggestion?
I like AlaskaGirl's idea of eating more fat, etc.... but I'm thinking... why not stick out the 2nd week of Induction first? I know it's discouraging, but I feel that what you're eating is perfect. Just keep doing what you're doing!
Then... if after 2 weeks of a full Induction you're still not loosing, try what AlaskaGirl is suggesting.
Hang in there!! This WOE works!!

Re: First weigh in (one week)

Thank to all of you. I woke up this morning and checked the scale, thinking maybe, just maybe yesterday was an quirk, I was actually up 1/2 pound, which puts me right back to where I was on day one. (I know I shouldn't and will not do the scale again). Anyway, I was thinking maybe I should just bail and try weight watchers (which has always been painfully slow and easy for me to cheat on). Then I came out here and read your notes and I am now motivated to stick to it until the two weeks is up and reevaluate.

After reading your posts I really think the only possible issue I have is not enough food and fat. Its so hard for me to get my head around dipping my grilled chicken breast in mayo just for a little added fat! This week I am going to try and keep doing what I am doing with all your comments in mind. Next Sunday will be decision time. Thanks again for keeping me on the wagon this morning!

I'm right there with you in the 'looking for some motivation' department. I'm on day 7 of induction and am not seeing much changing either. I started at 168, dropped within a day or two to 166 and my weigh-in this morning was at 167. Ugh. And my measurements haven't changed. I've stuck to the instructions pretty closely, too (this is my second time go-round and I'm following them closer than I did the first time with more positive results at day 7!). I looked back at my journal and have noted a few spots where I snuck a nibble of something that I shouldn't have and one night I had two small alcoholic drinks...don't know if that's what has prevented any progress but could be. TOM just passed so perhaps I'll see something in the coming week. Anyway, still trudging along and hoping to see some changes soon!

Re: First weigh in (one week)

I sounds like you have a good additude. I wish I had TOM or a few "cheat" spots I could look at, but I really don't. It would at least help me justify what happened and that if I change this or that the results will come. Right now I truly can not find anywhere that I am not living by the book. It makes it so hard to stick with it. And even a pound would feel like something. I am actually .7 lbs MORE than the day I started and thought, "wow, I have NEVER weighted this much, can't wait to see that scales shrink next week!"

But, we both know the alternative is not going to be good. I could binge on some sugar right this second, but where would that get me! So....we trudge on! Good luck to you. My bet is that TOM may have tainted your results some and in a few days you will see some loss. I hope so.

I hope so! And I hope you do, too! I'll be on the lookout to see how you do!! I guess all we can do is keep going knowing that it's only a matter of time!! I need to start measuring, too. I've been measuring my belly and neck but nothing else and know I should track other measurements, too. I'll make a point to do that tonight.

Re: First weigh in (one week)

I was just reading the 'sticky' at the top of this forum and found this and thought it would be inspiring to both of us:

"All the scales in the world are broken:
As an Atkineer, you may as well get used to the fact that all the scales in the world are broken. I went from a size 22 to a size 16 and no scale showed a weight loss. Nevertheless, when I went to Ross to buy a new pair of jeans, I was astounded to discover the plus sizes would no longer fit me and the same thing is going to happen to you.

You can lose inches and even drop down complete sizes and still remain the exact same weight on the scale.

In the past, no doubt during another low fat diet, you learned to use the scale to tell your daily fortune. If it dipped down you felt good about yourself but then would wonder why it wasn’t a bigger dip. If it dipped up you felt awful about yourself and decided a good solution for your depression was to binge immediately, after all, the scale claims you are fatter anyway right? And if you stay the same, you don’t know whether to be mad, sad or glad…

Ladies and gentleman I submit to you that using a clunky metal machine to determine our self worth for the day is a masochistic ritual that needs to take a flying leap out of our life. There are other kinds of weight we want to lose. The heavy, heavy burden of self defeating rituals that undermine our best efforts to change is definately something good to lose. Stay off the scale. Determine your own destiny. "
