  • Need help or im going to quit!

    Hi all

    I am on my third day of induction, I have tried this diet before and it worked so quickly, nothing seems to be happening this time.
    Of course im eating more now than before on my low fat diet , but nothing that is not on the " allowed food" list , and my calorie count is max 1200 on fitday.
    I have bee ndoing 1 hours cardio for the last couple of days and still no ketosis.

    Im thinking of quitting because the fat intake is honestly making me feel nauseous. If its not going to produce results im not sure its a good idea to stay with it.

    I know i sound impatient, but how soon do people really start to lose?

    Three days is probably not sufficient time for your body to adjust to its new routine and menu plan.

    Stay off the scale and give yourself two weeks.

    Two weeks in the large scheme of things is not much, and if something is important to you (or if you at least consider yourself important), then please just continue along the way you are going with a clean Induction, and then, after two weeks are up, evaluate how things are going.

    Never mind the sticks - often they give false readings, and are just another source of grief. I've never used them after trying them initially - because mine just wouldn't change sufficiently, and they made me depressed.

    Then, after two weeks check:

    Are you feeling better (or at least well)
    Do you have more energy
    Are you satisfied with your meals
    Are your clothes hanging better on your body

    These are all things that cannot be measured by a scale or a little stick

      Hi Savannah, :wave

      First welcome to the board - you'll find if you stay the course with Atkins you'll not only lose the weight but improve every aspect of you well being - both phyisically and emotionally.

      Regarding your frustration, It's important that you understand Atkins is not a quick fix, we all lose at different levels and at different times. But what I have a sense of is that you have never read...really read the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" and I'll tell you why.

      If you had you would know that weighing yourself during the 14 day period of induction isn't recommended. You would know that keto testing sticks aren't accurate and the results fluctuate. You would know that ketones are released not only in the urine but through breath and skin- and that some of most amazing examples of weight loss on Atkins have never tested positive on a ketone test strip - ever.

      If we try to do something without understand the principles that make it work - well of course were going to be frustrated!

      You can't drive a car without training and expect not to crash and you can't buy a book on speaking Italian because you want to learn French.

      My advice? Buy the book! make sure it's the 2002 version, read it..really read it. Read the messages on this board and re examine the reasons why you want to lose weight.

      If you want fast, fleeting results and a lifetime of yo-yo dieting then Atkins isn't for you. If you would rather the lose the weight and make profound changes in your overall physical and emotional well being - then Atkins is for you.

      But there's work to be done, and it starts with the book and the journey lasts your lifetime. I know I can speak for everyone here when I tell you we'll support you 100%

      But if you want this? if you are finally tiered of being fat and feeling awful, then you have some changes to make my friend.

      And those changes begin with getting your mindset in the correct place - and thats one of success not failure. Again, that all starts with reading and understanding why Atkins works.

      It's me hope for you that you will seize this opportunity to reinvent yourself, to do the work and make the deep personal commitment to succeed.

        Hi Savannah, I am slightly concerned about you. First of all, Atkins is a way of life, not a quick fix. The reason so many folks lose quickly initially is because the body switches from using glucose as fuel to using fat, this process forces the body to get rid of excess fluid. Most of the weight we lose is water, with some fat, of course. Now, about you: you just came off eating low-fat. Did you eat loads and loads of pasta, bread, cereal, potatoes, or did you mostly eat fruit and veggies? The former will mean you have lots of stored glucose and the latter will mean you don't, which matters a great deal (see above.)

        Many folks who are used to low-fat have a difficult time switching to a high fat diet. You have had the misconception driven into your head that fat is bad and fat makes you fat. This idea may be the reason the fat in this plan makes you nauseous. You may also be nauseous due to the "Induction flu" which is a good thing. It means your body is switching from burning glucose to burning fat.

        Try to do as Peterlock says and read or re-read the book. Fat will NOT hurt you in the absence of loads of carbs. Stick it out and you won't be sorry. That hungry (and unsatisfied) feeling you felt on low-fat will go away and you will have tremendous energy. Good luck and happy low-carbing!!!!

            since you were already on a diet you will noit get that rapid fluid loss from depleting your gylcogen stores like a virgin dieter does as you have already used them up for fuel in your other diet program.

            you will be losing body fat now on Atkins which is what we all want and you will be adding valuble lean body mass which will raise your metabolism and assist you in repairing any damage yo have done with your many diets.
            Plaeds read DANDR and learn aboput how to do Atkins program as a way of Lifr not a quick fix or you will be destined to be a life long yoyo dieter like those meal in a can programs. DIdn't you ever waonder how if the plan was so successfukl folk had to keep going back and keep going back as they kept gaining weight after the finished and were goalies? Atkins goalies don't yoyo as we have had months of procaticing the food portion control and good carb choises we need to make for our individual bodies metabolism.

            You didn't gain the weight in 3 days and you aren't going to lose it that fast either. you have a life timeof healthier eating to arrive at your scale number goal.

              Very Concerned!
              AARRGGHHH!

              Weighed myself this morning and i have put on a kilo.how is that possible in four days of atkins. Good Heavens!

              Whoosh fairy seems to have deposited everyone elses weight on me.
              The diet i was doing before was very low carb, no bread, no pasta, my way of life is very low carb, i just occassionally treat myself on the weekends to a dessert or some wine.
              My low carb diet just isnt as concentrated on fat as Atkins. Im tempted to strat again but not if this weight gain continues.

              Dont know how to post my stats yet but will look into it, in the meantime ill just writethem.

                I'm from the U.S. and admit I'm a little ignorant on the metric system and I am new to the diet...but I would think and from what I read in the book and from what I've been told...two things are at play here.

                1. You haven't been on the diet "full throttle" long enough. With your wine and dessert here and there every week or so..you are throwing yourself out of the process that helps one to lose weight on Atkins. I'm sure one of the moderators would know more about.

                2. If you have such a small amount to lose, it could take a little longer than someone with much more weight to drop.

                I have at least 20 pounds do go and I already know probably half will not come off in induction. 4-8 pounds in 14 days is probably what's likely for me.

                  Savannah, I feel your pain, but let me try to help you understand better about why Atkins is high fat. Firstly, please read this FAQ answer from Atkins.com:
                  Can I do a low-fat version of Atkins?

                  Fat is the mechanism that makes controlled carbohydrate weight loss work. The Atkins Nutritional Approach teaches you how to use fat to your advantage. When you are doing Atkins, fat is your friend not only because it is satiating but because it slows down the release of glucose into the blood. By moderating blood sugar swings, fat reduces carbohydrate cravings. Dietary fat, in combination with controlled carbohydrate consumption, accelerates the burning of stored body fat. When your body uses fat, rather than glucose for fuel, the metabolic process is called lipolysis.

                  However, you do want to eat good fat, Natural, healthy fat is found in olives and olive oil, seeds, nuts, seed and nut oils and butters, avocado, and oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel and butter. Saturated fat, found in meats, butter and coconut oil, poses no health risk in the Induction and Ongoing Weight Loss phases of the program. You will burn both dietary fat and body fat for energy. However, when you reach Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance and are no longer in a primarily fat-burning mode, it may be prudent to curtail the amount of saturated fat until more research is done.

                  The kinds of fat you should avoid are chemically altered, processed hydrogenated oils, such as margarine and shortening. Look for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils, and store them in a dark, cool place to keep them from going rancid or oxidizing. High heat changes the molecular structure of the cell and will transform even a good fat into a trans fat so be sure not to burn oil or allow it to smoke while cooking.

                  People who try to do their own low-fat version of Atkins will not only find themselves hungry, they also will not achieve the weight loss results of those who consume healthy fats.





                  You will lose SLOWER on a low-fat version of Atkins, and you will sabotage your efforts if you allow Maintenance-style behavior on the weekends (dessert and wine).

                  My advice to you is to start all over. Read the book, then do a clean Induction. Full fat!!! DO NOT be afraid. Choose healthy fats. You do not have to eat a ton of saturated fat. Fry fish in olive oil or safflower oil. Eating fat does not have to be a bacon free-for-all!

                  Until you wrap your head around what Atkins is all about and then put it into action, you will for one, never understand how we all are successful and you are not, and two, you won't achieve lifelong slimness with this WOL.

                    Please put your sclaes away and eat your Atkins according to the rules given in chapter 11 of your DANDR with the 3 cups of veggies, drink all your water, decafe the coffee if it isn't already, take the supplements and cvits you need based on your food choices, eat enough to satisfy your hunger and stop, do the mandatory exercise part of your Atkins both aerobic and resstance for the 30 min minimum required, and you will be a healtheir smaller person on day 15

                      No offense, Savannah, but if your menu stays this boring and virtually devoid of veggies, you will quit Atkins, undoubtedly. Please, please, please seek out some low carb recipes and put some "spice" into your menu!!

                        HANG IN THERE SAVANNAH! EVERYONE HERE WILL DO THEIR BEST TO HELP U OUT. I ALWAYS POST ANY QUESTIONS I MAY HAVE, AND NO MATTER HOW HARSH THE ANSWERS I'M THANKFUL THAT I HAVE SOMEONE TO ASK. SERIOUSLY TRY TO STAY OFF THE SCALE UNTIL THE 14TH DAY, AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS THEN. I KNOW THE SUSPENSE CAN KILL YOU, WOULD U RATHER BE SURPRISED OR DISAPPOINTED AT THE WEIGHT THE SCALE READS WHEN U HAVEN'T EVEN COMPLETED THE PHASE YET??????? ensive
