  • I'm DYING for a saltine!

I'm in Day 3 and am DYING for a saltine cracker. I'm starving and could go to the diner for some yummy bacon and eggs, but I'm still not sure this is the right diet for me. I'm wanting to lose 10 lbs in 1 month then go back to my usual diet. Is that even possible? HELP!!! And I had half and half in my coffee yesterday... Did I totally just screw up the whole thing?

Atkins is not a "diet", you can't just expect to lose xxx pounds in xx days and then go back to eating whatever. Did you follow another eating plan before (low calorie, low fat, South Beach, etc.)? Why do you want to do Atkins? How much do you have to lose? Why the 1 month deadline?

I don't think I was being mean, I was being honest. Atkins is a lifetime diet. You said you want to go on a diet for a month to lose 10 pounds, then resume your old eating patterns/habits. You were wondering if Atkins was right for you- so I told you.

If you hang in there a bit longer, the cravings for carbs will go away. I'm not an expert, but I think you can't just lose 10 pounds and go back to the way you were eating without gaining the weight back. Atkins has a maintenance program. Do you have the book?

Trust me, I used to eat a sleeve of saltines at work, and at home,I ate wheat thins. It just takes time. You can do it!

Re: I'm DYING for a saltine!

i'm not going to say this "diet isn't for you" - but one thing I know - just from having lost weight on MANY different "diets" in my life - you do need to figure what YOU can do for yourself that you can do for the rest of your life.

induction on atkins is hard - if you are in induction, such as I am (tomorrow will be the last day of my first two weeks) and I'm actually going on to extended induction...but if you're only 3 days in and feel like you "can't" do this then I'd say stick it out for the next few days and if you STILL feel like that then maybe you need to do some research and see exactly what it is you feel like you CAN do. I'm not going to try and advocate any other specific eating plans - but maybe you should look into something else such as south beach or weight watchers to see what works better for you.

like the poster above said - this way of eating isn't for you to just do for a "few week" to lose "few pounds" because when you give up sugar and carbs, as this way of eating has you do - once you go back to eating the way you've always eaten - you'll gain it right back.

you HAVE to figure out what you can do for life and completely change your lifestyle in order to do it "right" - just remember "if you keep doing what you've always done, you'll get the same results you've always gotten".

you can't expect REAL change if you keep doing what you've done in your past because your past is how you got to where you are now. believe me. I know. this isn't just a physical change but a mental one as well.

Again - I would say READ THE BOOK and stick with it - find some variety in what you can eat and see if this really is the way you want to go. I know for me it's not just about weight loss but also the fact that my body doesn't process sugar and carbs the way some people do (i'm insulin resistant) so I know for ME that this IS the way to go - but you need to really ask yourself if you want to do this for the rest of your life. if not then no, maybe this isn't the one for you.

I wish you good luck in finding what works for you - and if it IS atkins, then fabulous!!! but if not then whatever it is I hope it all works out.

edit: I just wanted to add - I'm NOT detering you from doing atkins at all, because now that I have educated myself ON atkins, I believe it is a WONDERFUL way of eating for many people - and in fact, as I said earlier, stick with it and see if it IS something you can do (but if not, figure out what it is you can do).
as for the saltine - just remember that you WANT to get those cravings to go away - that's the point of learning how to eat a low-carb diet. i know you want one - last week i can't tell you how bad I wanted some fruit - but instead I had some peach seltzer water (which helped my situation) and I stopped thinking about it. you CAN do this - but if you keep thinking about how bad you want one, all you will do is binge and eat the entire sleeve of crackers (just saying from personal experience) - you need to re-condition your brain and think about other things. if you keep telling yourself, "I CAN'T HAVE IT - I CAN'T HAVE IT - I CAN'T HAVE IT" - human response is normally to say "ah s*rew it yes i can" and eat as much as you can get your hands on...you need to figure out what it is you CAN have and say "well, i really can't have this - however i CAN have some of these". you CAN do this!
