Re: Help!! Everyone's Attacking This Diet!!

And don't buy into the idea that the food will get boring. I think I read somewhere that most people only eat about 10 different things on a regular basis. If you make the effort to cook and try new things, the list of great Atkins food is endless. If you haven't browsed Linda Sue's terrific recipe site yet, you definitely need to get over there now!

And as for other peoples' opinions --- stick your fingers in your ears and say "nanananananana"! It's your body. Trust yourself.

Well put Adena! Most people think of Atkins as just the induction phase of the diet not the upper phases where your food options are so expanded. It's frustrating when people are so judgemental when they are just simply uneducated about what they are talking about. I love this way of eating! It has changed my mind not just my body and quite honestly the thought of eating white flour anything really turns my stomach... whole grains are so much tastier!
If you need proof just look at the many people on here who are properly following this WOL and KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF. I started at around the 230 mark and now am at a healthy 150-155 and have stayed there with no issues by following the plan. I couldn't be happier and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, and I want you to feel that way too Kami! Keep your head up and a positive attitude, you have TONS of great people here who are more than happy to support you!

Re: Help!! Everyone's Attacking This Diet!!

Before I started Atkins, I was doing a low-gylcemic diet as per doctors orders. Now...low-glycemic and Atkins are not THAT different! But I find it funny that if you tell people you are eating a 'low-glycemic' diet they are really impressed and curious but if you mention 'low carb' or 'Atkins' you get a totally different reaction...it's just people's perceptions are tainted by rumors.

To me, Atkins is just going back to whole foods that we should be eating instead of processed junk anyway. So how can THAT be harmful?

Re: Help!! Everyone's Attacking This Diet!!

People have weird conception of what is healthy. The best thing is to arm yourself with research and facts and know that what you are doing is a great thing for your body. That is what I did.
Some people treat diets like a fix but the truth is that once we get very fat or obese a quick fix is not going to help us. We need a temporary system in place. But it is always going to be a system of some kind because all eating the old way will do is getting us back to fat. It is not the diets fault.

Re: Help!! Everyone's Attacking This Diet!!

            Hi!
Just avoid telling people your doing Atkins. Since most of our problems are related to consuming too many starches/sugars (=carbos) its easy to get around people's negative ideas about a LC lifestyle.

I tell them that my system is very sensitive to starches and sugars and I have to avoid them. No one questions me! They just don't get that Atkins it is a healthy lifestyle! But being 'allergic' to starches and sugars is understandable to most people.

There is nothing wrong with a nice menu of meat, butter and greens!

BTW, I'm new to the forum (but have followed it for a long time)!
I'm in-love with natural, healthy foods!

Re: Help!! Everyone's Attacking This Diet!!

I love eating the way I get to on the atkin's diet! It's really diversified my arsenal of receipies. My hubby thrives on variety. He's not on the diet with me because frankly, the man is too skinny, but I like the challenge of coming up with new dinners that the whole family can enjoy. Say the course, drink LOTS of water, and if you feel good- Who cares what other people say!

Re: Help!! Everyone's Attacking This Diet!!

                Hey there!

I know!!! I constantly get the same sorts of things (a lot of the time from my vegetarian friend)

I think Brook raises such an important and bewildering point:
Why do these people feel they have the right to knock you when you are making a concerted effort to change for the better: eating meat, fish, loads of vegetables, water and decaf drinks, and not criticise when you have (presumably, if you're anything like I was anyway!) been throwing burgers, pizzas, baguettes, crisps, chips, chocolate, do-nuts, beer and all sorts down your neck!

Tell them you'd prefer their support, than their criticism! I find that not one of these people have actually ever read the book - just sensationalist newspaper articles about people eating nothing but eggs, bacon, black pudding, burgers and steak all day long (who could afford that?) and then keeling over from a heart attack. The Ol' "Dr Atkins died of a heart attack" snipe haunts me daily...(he did not - official cause of death was "blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma".)

If they look closely, most 'diets' or WOE's now recommend at least a low GI approach to food (somehow, saying you are on low GI rather than atkins seems to be forgiveable...who knows why?), and most I see in magazines have very few carbs, particularly after 6pm - it's just good sense!

I don't know why vegetarians are allowed to cut out almost all proteins with no-one batting an eyelid, and we are not permitted to restrict Bad Carbs without copping abuse from all corners...!

Does anyone have any more good come-backs, educational snippets for people??
                Fifth time's a charm...?
