  • Laxatives

I was desperate, I hadn't gone in 5 days, so I took some ex-lax. Let's just say, I feel better. However, I've been reading that this might slow down my weight loss. Why? BTW, I tried psyllium husks and tons of water and nothing else seemed to help. For the record (TMI I know) I didn't rid myself of a lot of water, it was actually just the opposite..a lot of solid. Ok I'm done grossing everyone out!!!

    Re: Laxatives

LOL, its very common and for some reason, we just don't go as much or as often on this plan. There is some help. I eat a daily flax seed muffin and others take some phyllism (which isn't spelled right) but works.
Flax seed muffins are really easy to make and good for you.
In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup of flax meal, 1 teas of baking powder, 1 teas of cinnamon, 1 pkg of splenda, 1 dash of salt, 1 egg and 1 teas butter, mix well. Put it in a glass custard cup and nuke it for 1 minute. Wa la, an induction friendly muffin. Oh butter the custard cup before you add the meal so it will just fall out.
If you want, have it with cream cheese

      Re: Laxatives

I take a tablespoon of flax seed oil approximately every other day and this seems to keep my systems moving.

        Re: Laxatives

I hadn't heard of laxatives slowing weightloss but I did find this info on why it is not a good idea to use them regularly when I googled
        laxatives affecting weightloss
Laxatives and Weight Loss - You must to know about using Laxatives for Weight Loss
        How Laxatives Work
Laxatives are manufactured to more or less act as a sponge and, in effect, soak up the body's fluids and then releasing them through your stool.

        The Harmful Effects Of Laxatives
What happens often is that people begin to rely on taking laxatives to create a normal stool motion. The truth is that daily consumption of a laxative is extremely harmful and should be avoided at all costs.
If constipation is a reason for using laxatives then it is best to drink large amounts of water on a daily basis and to ensure that your diet is full of fibre-rich foods. It's also a good idea to be active throughout the day. . . . . .

Medications Aren't As Effective When Mixed With Laxatives

Another side effect of laxatives is that if you are taking other medications of some kind they will also become less effective.

        Laxatives And Weight Loss
If you aren't eating enough your laxative use will become even more painful as you won't have eaten enough calories for waste products to move through your intestines at any rate.

Unfortunately another side effect of laxative use is that as your body is releasing a lot of water your body will then think that it needs to retain more water. As a result, your laxative use has caused you to carry more water than before.
The few times I have been badly constipated I resorted to glycerine suppositories which soften the impacted stool and allow you to expel it without too much pain and strain.
