  • First Day

Today is my first day of induction phase. I decided I need to fast for
7-10 days and take the vitamins that don't require food on the stomach. This is going to be a struggle until I reach ketosis but I think fasting will get me there faster. I won't check for 10 days, February 4. I will report back. Now I'm going to read all the existing threads and look for other's experiences, wisdom, and successes.

      Re: First Day

3:30 am Well, I've already failed. I was sleeping and for 2 hours I heard snoring, snoring, snoring. I got up to sleep on the sofa, decided to clip the coupons from yesterday's paper, went to get the scissors and saw a York's peppermint patty. Ate it without even thinking. I'm so disappointed in myself!
I appreciate that you responded. Look at that waist of yours!! You must be so satisfied with yourself.
My first day now will be today. I promise to think before eating.

What kind of fast are you doing and why for so long?

Do you have a problem getting into ketosis?

          Re: First Day

Atkins is not about fasting. I am assuming by fast (because you mention not having any food in your stomach) you are referring to a water fast. Which is NOT in any shape or fashion safe for 7 to 10 days. Yes, I do know what I am talking about, I am an advid faster (usually do 3 a year). I have done, water fasts, juice fasts and the Master Cleanse (which is my fav for cleansing, but extrememly difficult to go 10 days with NO food). The thing about fasts is that you have to be well educated to do them. I hope, you have taken the time to research your fast, and if it is a water fast do no plan on doing it for more than 3 days tops! It is physically dangerous to go longer than that. The purpose of a fast is to rid yourself of the bad stuff that builds up in your body over time (this does not include the fat that has built up). True, you will lose weight on a fast, I lost 15lbs in 10 days on the MC; however, this is mostly water weight, which if you follow the Induction phase properly, should also be your result and without having to overcome the HUGE obsticle of not eatting for 10 days. This WOE works, if you are serious and not looking for a quick fix (although some weight will come off very quickly). Fasting has a puropse, it is just not weight loss. Atkins will give you a safe and effective way to lose weight and keep it off.

I agree with Mrs Hartzell, fasting is not Atkins
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I am in ketosis today! Yay! And that is what fasting does for me. Now to begin the Adkins program in full. That didn't take long at all!

                Re: First Day

I am glad to hear you are going to start Atkins now. But do be aware that you might experience a gain in weight after eating nothing for a couple of days once you start giving your body some food.

And your body might need a few days of eating good food before deciding it is safe to start dropping any weight.

So try not to get on your scales for at least a week to let your body work out what is happening.

                  Re: First Day

I am so sick today. Headache, sleepiness, fibromyalgia pains have returned. Is it normal to feel this way? I've eaten a small salad with a little ham, no dressing, and lots of water (8 16.9 bottles) both days since ketosis. I just feel lousy. Had 3 days of no power and no getting out of the driveway, which prohibited walking so I've been riding the stationary bike. Anyone have this malaise in the beginning? I'd love someone to say its not abnormal.

                    Re: First Day

Fasting is not Atkins. You could have eaten Atkins and been in ketosis in the same amount of time.

A lot of people suffer from "induction flu" which is what it sounds like you have. It helps to actually eat more veggies, and you should be eating more food in general (every 6 hours, and staying above at least 1400 calories) so you don't go into starvation mode and hinder weight loss.

                    Good luck.

                      Re: First Day

Normal, Induction flu feeling is very normal. I was going to try to discourage the fasting also because Dr A is strongly against hunger in any form. He said, and to me it makes sense that when your hungry your body wants to hang on to that fat. You might have decreased your weight loss.
If your using the strips as an indictor your in ketosis they work but they are a big waste of money if you ask me. It only tells you that fat is spilling into your urine. Could be body fat or yesterdays bacon.

My advise to anyone who is new to this diet is follow it "to the letter' and don't try to improve it. Give it 3 months and you will have the optimum weight loss. After the third month, experiment and see what happens if you want, but I don't think you'll want to change.
Ask any of the big losers on this board and they will tell you they read the book and followed the instructions.

Is the ham fatty or lean? We do need fat - our ratios on induciton need to be something like 65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs. If you dont like mayonnaise-type dressings oyu could try oil/vinegar, but you do need some fat.

I think that because you were not eating any food at all before starting induction your body is feeling the effects of having been deprived, so you are getting the 'normal' initial induction feelings of tiredness and weakness at double-strength.

hopefully within a few days once your body realises you are not going to punish it by starving it but instead feed it nourishing meals it will stop protesting and you will feel better.

Hang in there and don't skimp on the veggies or the fats. Try to include more nutritious veggies than just lettuce (aka chewywater) in your 3 cups.
