  • CONFUSED about vegees...

ok, so i'm about 3 weeks in now and I still really haven't understood something about vegees...

according to the "rules" of induction - you're only "allowed" "Two to three cups per day" of the salad vegetables, and this INCLUDES romaine lettuce (or any other lettuce) - yet of the 15 - 20 carbs per day that we're supposed to have, "most must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables" - but if I have even 3 cups of lettuce for a salad - according to the carb counter in the back of the book, lettuce ONLY has 0.4 g net carbs per cup. So that means that 3 cups of romaine lettuce has 1.2 grams of carbs...

and it goes on to say - for the other vegees, "you can have one cup per day if salad does not exceed two cups"

yet my 3 cup salad exceeds 2 cups - but again, 3 cups of my salad is ONLY 1.2 g carbs!

that means that the other 18 grams of carbs should come from elsewhere because i've "exceeded" my 3 cups for the day?

I'm sure i'm just thinking too much into this - but honestly i am very confused!

I LOVE having big salads for lunch (which is normally at least 2 cups of lettuce) and I have about 1/2 cup of spinach for breakfast, that only 'technically' leaves me about 1/2 cup of vegees left for the day - and those 2 cups of lettuce plus the spinach ONLY adds up to 2 grams of carbs total.

so i'm really not eating a ton of carbs in vegee form (which i LOVE vegees) - and I just want to know if it's "cheating" by eating MORE than 3 cups of vegees (if 2 of those cups are lettuce and 1/2 is spinach).

Strictly speaking, yes if you have more than the total 3 cups of veg on induction you are eating more than the induction rules say

But to get mroe carbs from these 3 cups yuo need to choose different veggies, as oyu have realised, as lettuce will not amount to more than a few net carbs.

By choosing lowest carb veggies from the list of 50 plus options you are cheating your body out of the carbs it could be eating.

Dr Atkins told us to get 'most' of our carbs from our veggies on induction, with things like cheese, eggs, cream, sweeteners taking up the remaining carbs up to 20 net carbs.

If you are only eating 1 or 2 net carbs of veggies you really need to be eating less than that number of all the other things with carbs in them. So realistically you can only have maybe one sweetener or one ounce of cheese or one egg!!

So try choosing other veggies for these 2 weeks then move to OWL rung one and add 5 net carbs of lettuce if you like, which is a HUGE salad of about 13 cups!!

For induction particularly 'Salad veg' does not equal just lettuce

In our semi-annual veg challenge we challenge participants to get 12-15 net carbs from their veggies (17-20 if on OWL or maintenance) and many of them do

Look in the semi-annual challenges forum for the threads for that challenge and see how they did it.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

This is the list of the salad veggies you can have, so you can make a dynamite salad with lots of add-ins, or forego lettuce altogether. ( I love it, so I have it a lot, but some folks get to where they can't look at another piece of lettuce for a while) Or add some of those things to your eggs in the morning. I have a special relationship with bell pepper. Jicama is a great snack too! I have no idea what "moche" is however..... Good luck!

      Vegetables
You can have two to three cups per day of:

      alfalfa sprouts
      daikon
      mushrooms
      arugula
      endive
      parsley
      bok choy
      escarole
      peppers
      celery
      fennel
      radicchio
      chicory
      jicama
      radishes
      chives
      lettuce
      romaine lettuce
      cucumber
      moche
      sorrel
These salad vegetables are high in phytonutrients and provide a good source of fiber.
