  • Mustard and Smoking

Alrighty, here goes. 49/Alabama/170 lbs/5'6. I have 35 pounds to lose and 6 months to do it in. My daughter is getting married in July and I want to look H-O-T in my dress. Ive heard wonders about this diet from a guy I work with and I've decided to give it a try. I purchased Dr. Atkins book last week and have read thru the induction.

I have a couple of questions. Help a newbie out?

I'm a smoker and do want to quit. However, while dieting is probably not the best time for me to do it. Can you smoke while on Atkins? If this is absolutely necessary (as in I cant lose weight without doing it), I will go cold turkey for 6 months. If it does not affect my ability to lose, Id rather have some comfort during the beginning.

Also, I've read a lot about condiments. No ketchup, mayo is OK, no BBQ sauce, sour cream is allowed. What about mustard? I looked at the ingredients and it says zero carbs but I'm just making sure. Also, should I stay off ketchup for all the phases or just the induction?

Thanks a bunch guys! This is a FAB website. xoxo

    Re: Mustard and Smoking

    Hi welcome,
Maybe stopping smoking and doing Atkins would be great. You would kill two things with one stone. It is all about being healthier so it would be great. You would still lose if you are smoking though.
When deciding if something is OK to eat you would first check with the allowed list. If it is on if fine. If not well then you have to wait. I have mustard as a condiment as long as there is not sugar added to it. Check the ingredient list (not just the nutrition information list). There is ketchups made that we can eat. There is one make by Heinz with Splenda - and there is a sugar reduced one. They are not always that easy to find though.
Remember to start exercising too. Helps with the hotness.

We have a few members but Brook is the one that comes to mind first who started her diet and quit smoking the same time and did both VERY well. If you need some support you might just PM her. She will love to help. I quit smoking first and then went on WOE.
I couldn't do it alone, I used the gum and had to get a prescription for it at that time. It really worked for me.

quitting smoking and starting Atkins at the same time is great, just be prepared for the tough part of the detoxification your body will go through... there will be hard times... if you know this and are prepared your chances of success are that much greater... drink lots of water, TAKE YOUR VITAMINS....and when you are not feeling well... just know that on the other side of your detox from refined carbs and the toxins of smoking...you will be healthy, and shiny and radiant from the inside to the outside... you will glow at your daughters wedding... and I am not talking about the ember at the end of your fag... it will come from with in you! THAT there is all the motivation I would need to quit... and besides that you would have a great story to tell your unborn grand kids... that you are there... to be thier grandmother because you got healthy for thier mothers wedding... it can be and always will be a double celebration... anniversary of a marriage and of whole body wellness!

            Congrats on begining your journey...

AND on as side note... READ the whole ATKINS book... cover to cover... emerse yourself in it... its the only way...

You can smoke whilst doing atkins. the only problem I have found is that it can get in the way of exercise, as can make my breathing difficult...... which leads me to ask the question why do I smoke!?

But, yes, you can still lose weight the Atkins way if you smoke

yeah, im a smoker too, and i personally wouldnt quit and start atkins at the same time. i know its not healthy and blah blah blah, but i find that smoking makes my cravings go away like magic.. then after you stop getting so many cravings you could quit.. just my two cents.
