  • Measurement questions & some more..

    hello everyone!

im currently on induction phase, on my 3rd day actually. i have searched high and low about these questions and wasnt able to find the answers, so i hope kind people will help me with these:

    1. i know the list oils allowed (olive oil, mayo, etc.) from the acceptable foods list, but it didnt say HOW MUCH OIL should be consumed in a day.... is there a limit? I'm specially concerned about mayo bec i love it!

    2. carrots & potatoes are not allowed, i know....but i see a lot of posts in the section about 'restaurants' where they are saying "toss the tomatoes and onions, but not the pickles" --- are tomatoes and onions NOT ALLOWED? what about garlic? it's not in the list at all.

    3. can anyone give me an idea HOW BIG a 4-ounce cheese is? like, the size of a matchbox? and what if the cheese is grated, how much is 4 ounces?

    4. lastly, what about the limit for HEAVY CREAMS?

    thanks!!!

Atkins said something like...I didn't say calories don't count, I said don't count calories. We are to eat until we are satisfied, but not stuffed. If you are hungry - EAT. It's good to have a high percentage (65%) of your calories coming from fat during Induction so you don't need to be afraid of added fat (oil, butter, mayo, etc). It's not like you're limited to 4T of mayo each day, but I wouldn't suggest eating a jar of it per day either.

Here's the list of foods allowed on Induction. It lists tomatoes and onions, but note their limits (up to one cup (total) if salad veggies are limited to two cups).

If I had to guess, I would say 4oz of block cheese would look like a pack of playing cards. You should totally get a digital food scale. I LOVE mine. I measure everything. When you buy cheese maybe you should parse it up right away into one or two ounce portions. For example, if you buy an 8 ounce block of cheese cut it in half so you have two 4 ounce blocks of cheese. Then cut each of those in half so you have four 2 ounce blocks of cheese, etc. You can do the same with pre-shredded cheese - eyeball it to split it in half and then split the halfs in half, etc. (FYI - pre-shredded cheese usually contains potato starch - I try to stick to block cheese, but in a pinch I'll have pre-shredded cheese).

The foods allowed on Induction state how much cream you can have.

Good luck to you on your Atkins journey!

Oil is considered a fat and it should be about 60% of your daily menu. Check out FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal and enter your menu, then check the graft and see how much fat you have taken in.
Tomatoes are fruit so we are careful about them, but we eat them.
Cream cheese comes in 8 ounce bricks, Philadelphia, so half would be 4 ounces. Sliced cheese is usually an ounce a slice. Check the total weight and then split it into 2 ounce poritons.

In which threads are they saying to toss the tomatoes and onions from salads? Because that is very, very, VERY bad and wrong information.

Tomatoes and onions are allowed during Induction phase.
