What's the deal with sugar alcohol? I found some Russell Stover sugar free candy sweetend with splenda. It says it's only got like 3 carbs per serving because you subtract the sugar alcohol. I tried to find it in the Atkins book but couldnt.

Re: Sugar Alcohol......help!!
In induction, you count it. You get 3 servings of Splenda, so 3 grams is 3 servings.
The addition of the alcohol group to the sugar chain makes the sugar indigestible. However, some people experience stalls when they eat sugar alcohols. In other people, sugar alcohols can cause intestinal cramping.
Once you're out of induction, they're fine for an infrequent treat, IMHO.

Re: Sugar Alcohol......help!!
New research shows that we digest more of a sugar alcohol than early research stated. It has always been known that some people digest and absorb most of it. The thing is, if you do not get serious digestive consequences from eating it (gas, cramps, diarrhea) you are most likely absorbing and metabolizing most of the sugar alcohol as carbohydrate.People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Sugar Alcohol......help!!
There are actually studies showing you should count as much as half of the reported carb count, so 10 grams of sugar alcohol would be 5 net carbs. I use them sparingly. I have a sugar free syrup that I use in a honey mustard recipe. I use 2 TBS when I inject a whole 10 lb pork shoulder. 2 tbs is 11 grams of malitol, so I count it as 5.5 grams over 10 lbs of meat."...Health and fitness are more than just personal goals - they're gifts we give to the people around us. Well, I must not digest *any* of it.Originally posted by SunnySmile501 View PostNew research shows that we digest more of a sugar alcohol than early research stated. Re: Sugar Alcohol......help!!
Same with me. I'm not a candy person, but in 2006 I was taking a long trip, so I got some sugar free hard candies to suck on along the way. I decided to try a couple the night before I left. I ended up not being able to go for two days. I spent the night in the bathroom. My belly was so swollen and distended I looked like I was pregnant. The rest went in the trash. Nothing is worth the distress I had over three little fruit flavored candies!Originally posted by BDawg View PostWell, I must not digest *any* of it.People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.
