  • nuts

    i know people who lost weight eating nuts during their first couple of weeks of the diet

    i have today started atkins had some chicken for breakfast and almonds if i keep in the 20g allowence can i keep the nuts as they are feeling and stop me eating to much meat and keep craving away

    x the palm of my hand is a good indication of how much meat i should consume at each meal is this right

    Hi there! You are supposed to wait on nuts because their glycemic index will cause you to be hungry. Also, they are easy to overeat and carb creep sets in, so I'd recommend you wait until later on in this plan.

    Right now, you should look to a ratio of approximately 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carb.

    Measuring food becomes important, not for caloric reasons, but to be sure you're right on with percentages consumed.

      stop me eating to much meat
      You can't eat too much meat, unless you are eating more than when you become just satisfied at each meal. Why did you say you are concerned with eating too much meat? Pure meats are one of the few foods with zero carbs and if you choose meats with a good amount of fat, you will become full this way.

        Just want to add.

        The veggies you are eating with your meals will provide satiety during the meal, due to the bulk of the fiber in the veggies. The fat you are eating will provide after and between meal satiety. This is part of the reason why Dr. Atkins insisted we eat a combination of fats, proteins and carbs during our meals and is part of the reason why Atkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein one. It's the fat that keeps you from feeling hungry between meals, not the protein.

          congrats on getting your Atkins started.

          You are correct about the serving size of the meats and as you have already learned Atkins is about portion control through appetite control. if after you have had your meal with some fats carbs and protein you are hungry within 1 hr then you need more protein at your meal and should up the serving size by an ounce until you get to where you are no longer hungry.

          Nuts used to be allowed and thousands did use them as a part of their Atklins however as as been mentioned portion control was a very big issue with them and Dr Atkins removed them from Induction. They were a very ig part of his daily menu and are very healthy for us so when you arrrive in OWL on day 15 you can quickly reach the nut carb rung on the thrid week if your metabolism allows and that is the key your individual metabolism.

          As Dr Atkins said in his last TV interview it is just 14 days of strick eating and you have 70 yrs to go.

            your right about the nuts making me hungry i have now over eaten 2day on seeds and rice too! i have learn't my lesson and start again 2 moro.
            i just get confused about how much to eat and when as i've over eaten for years and not very in touch huger or full up sytoms

            i plan to have 2moro morning kippers with butter around 8.30am
            12.30pm slice of cheese plus some parma ham cup of coffee with cream
            4.30pm slice of cheese cup of coffee with cream
            6.30pm makeral fish plus avacado plus brocilli
            8.30pm slice of cheese
            lots of water how does that sound i tend to just eat out of supermarkets marks and spencer packs of meat and fsh as i don't really like anything to fancy

              Hello carli :wave Wow another Brit on board!! :joy

              You dont seem to be eating much in the way of veggies on the list you wrote.
              You should be having 2 cups of salad veggies from the acceptable list plus 1 cup from the 1-cup list (or another cup off the 2-cup list) Your up to 20 carbs ought to be at least half from veggies.

              And spread them out through the day and always eat them with some fats.

              Also cheese should be limited to 3-4 ounces per day so check your slices of cheese (real cheese too - not 'cheese food' like Dairylea etc) are only 1 ounce each.

                I noticed the coffee with cream too. I hope that's decaff coffee and you are keeping the cream with your daily limit. If you haven't read the book you need to read it because it will really help you understand how to do the WOE.

                  when you first start Atkins it is very improtant to get you switched form carby foods to the fats of Atkins as your primary fuel so nobody cares how much food you eat in the beginning because we all know as soon as your ketosis kicks in you will be posting I'm not hungry how do you guys handle that. you will forget to eat lunch and it will be 4 or 5 in the afternoon and you haven't eaten since breakfast yep that is coming for you in just a few days. then you can reign yourself in a bit and do your portion control to asssit you with your weight loss. We can consume more cals on Atkins and get the same weight loss as a high carb low fat plan because it takes more cals to convert our fats and proteins from mouth to energy then carbs. BUT their is a limit on that amount more we can eat ususally about 20-30% more so if you were on a 1200 cal plan to lose weight you will lose the same weight on a 1440-1560 cal Atkins. With the mandatory exercise part of your Atkins too you might just foind yourself losing weight eating 2500 cals when you couldn't on 1200 before.

                  So follow those rules in chapter 11 for your eating and do the mandatroy exercise part of your Atkins too chack out chapter 22 for some asssitnace if you need a plan to start that too.

                    I am pround of you for posting and keeping it up!! Great job!

                    What happens with coffee with caffeine is that it releases adrenaline then you liver releases sugar into the bloodstream for extra energy. Yep, that sugar is registered as if you ate carbs. This is the same thing during TOM, I can't remember where I heard it but something about the amount of sugar (for growing babies) in the lining that is released during TOM.

                      thanks guys for all your help was off a bit yesterday on cheese and coffee(that comment about the sugar released has scared me off coffee thanks!ha) re-read the book over and today i am clear, thanks
