  • HELP!!!! Induction phase

    :no
    Hi you guys!

I am new to the atkins revolution. I have had the book for about a year (along with the south beach diet) but it was just recently that I have gotten up the nerve to actually try this diet. I am discouraged however. I started thursday afternoon last week 3/17/2005 and I admit I have cheated maybe once or twice. ( cheesecake one day, bread another)It is almost that time again and I have not lost any weight. I know that I have cheated but I have made significant changes in my eating habits( I started eating alot of meat, which I have never been a meat eater before, I have even started eating pork, yuck) and have reduce my carbs significantly (a day before I started I tracked my daily carb habits, 250 approx per day) I am still only averaging 20- 30 carbs a day. Shouldn't I have seen some type of improvement ( other than appetite supressant?). I have also started excersing 3-4 times a week for the last 2 weeks( I never use to exercise before) and 2 weeks prior to this I was on a 1600 calorie diet (from 2200). Today is only tuesday but I need some help before I write this diet off as not being for me.
I am 5'8 195 pounds and I just started my menustration yesterday( i know this probably weighs in somehow, no pun intended).....

First of all, if you've only been on Atkins since Thursday and have cheated a few times, it is likely you exceeded your carb limit for the day and with sugar, you aren't in ketosis. The key, as I'm sure you've read in the book, is achieiving ketosis so that you burn fat. It takes at least 48 hours once you begin eating the Atkins way to achieve ketosis, so you can see it is counter-productive to cheat.

Yes, TOM can also impact weight loss, but let's take first things first. Either you are following Atkins or you aren't. It's not the kind of program that you can pick and choose which days you won't to follow it and which days you don't.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

The best advice I can give you is to tough it out and get through those cravings. They will be gone after a few days, I promise. You will also start to lose weight when you go into ketosis, and it will most likely come off fast. You are doing really well by limiting your carbs for the past few days, think of it as practice! Print out a list of acceptable and keep it with you at all times. I know how hard it is to not cheat, trust me, but if you don't cheat for a few days you will be thrilled with how good you feel and your new found self control. Best of luck to you!

this WOE works if you stick to it and do a clean induction which you are not...read the book...follow the rules and eat only things listed on the acceptable list and you will see a loss.

            Healing from Carb Addiction

In my humble opinion. you want to give Atkins at least 6 months before deciding it isn't for you. if you gain weight on carbs, this isn't likely to be a temporary problem but a life-long situation. it is best to get a handle on the carb thing now. i used to think i could never live without bread. now, it doesn't even tempt me.

if you dislike pork, don't eat pork. eat the kinds of meat, fish and poultry you do enjoy.

congratulations on adding exercise to your life, if you stick with atkins and be faithful, you will receive the maximum benefits of that hard work.

Above all, stay away from the scale. Especially during TOM. Give your body the time it needs to complete these positive changes.

thank you so much you guys. I was in tears today. you see as i stated before it has been only in the past month that I started to care about what i eat. ( whether it is calories or carbs) . but I guess deep down inside with so meat eating, I am scared somehow that I will gain weight in 2 weeks( i know, i've read the book numerous times).Maybe what it boils down to is I am afraid that I will give it my all and fail. HOwever, the times that I cheated I can really say after the first two days, I really did not want it that bad.

I just have to do it.. and I can think of the days I did follow the program as practice.
question: do you guys count every meat as 0, such as cornbeef and roast beef. and does it matter what kind of turkey meat that you get ( I love the honey flavored ones.)

go into it with the right attitude...don't think about the past failures...today is a new day so get on board with this WOE and you can do this...use fitday.com to track your carbs/cals/fats and make sure you are getting enough...meat would be 0 carbs but make sure it doesn't have any added sugars...you know that honey is a sugar and therefore not allowed on induction...review the list of foods and don't eat anything not listed there.

I understand your fear...because I had it myself.

#1. I've been overweight since I was about 6 or 7. I'm now 32. I haven't been able to lose the weight all this time. I was scared I was resistant to loss.

#2. I'm on Depo-Provera, which can cause weight retention. I figured that if anything, THIS would stunt my progress.

#3. Both my sig.other and I have been thoroughly brainwashed by the low-fat people into thinking that anything with FAT in it is BAD. And fat causes fat, or so Susan Powter used to claim.

So we had The Chat about "Trying" Atkins for the 14-days of Induction. Sounds like the 12 Days of Christmas, right?

Well, I'm on day 8, and I feel like it's Christmas! I'm down 14 pounds, and I feel SO much better. I don't really crave sweets at all (and when I do, that's when the 3 sweetener allowance is handy), I sleep better, and I FEEL better.

So stick with it and don't be scared. My DH is now learning that it's no crime to put garlic butter on his asparagus....which is a feat in itself, trust me

Welcome aboard, and I'm happy that you're going to try and stick this out. Personally, I love fitday and use it religiously. I would really urge you to do a clean induction for two weeks in order to break bad habits, sugar cravings, etc. It's only two weeks, you can do it and, you'll see results! Now, if you're doing induction by the book, there is no way you can go over 20 carbs. Yup, it involves measuring your veggies, but believe me, once you move into the later phases like OWL, it will just be second nature to you. Fitday also helps you see where you're at in terms of eating 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs which is what we aim for in induction. Remember to drink your water, and exercise is non-negotiable. In terms of snacks, there are lots of things, from olives to pickles (not sweet) to cheese rollups, really the list is endless.

                        SNACKS

                        NORMALLY I SNACK ON:

                        STRING CHEESE
                        OLIVES
                        PICKLES-DILL
                        A HARD BOILED EGG

THINGS LIKE THAT, AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT IS PRETTY EASY TO CARY THEM AROUND WITH YOU!

GOOD LUCK FOR THE DURATION OF YOUR INDUCTION PROCESS :hug

since i have been on my menstration i have the sudden urge to munch all the time. I have fought the big battle this morning with pasteies donuts etc. I was wondering whether or not there was a 0 carb count snack I could have to munch on. maybe you can help me. here was my diary for today.

                          Time you ate: 8:00 am
                          Food Consumed:
                          coffee w/ half and half
                          mountaind dew diet
                          2 eggs w cheese
                          Supplements:
                          none

                          Total carbs for Breakfast:
                          2.2 grams

                          Time you ate: 12:00 pm
                          Food Consumed:
salad lettuce 0.7,with ounce of cheese >1, eggs 0.6, crabmeat 0, ranch dressing 1
                          jellow/ whipped cream 3.2
                          Supplements:
                          none

                          Total carbs for Lunch:
                          5.5 grams

Am I counting correctly? the way that i see it is that already today I have had 7.7 carbs with only 12 carbs to go. I want to save some for dinner but I cannot help but wanting to snack. I love cheese and lunchmeat but if i am not mistaken, if I was to snack on lunchmeat w/ ranch or just cheese, I would have to count 1 carb per chesse string (or the dressing). This would bring down the number of carbs i could consume this evening.

Maybe you guys could give me some pointers...what am I doing wrong? Should I not rely on the cafeteria at work for variety......????

I just looked on the mountain dew website and your diet MD contains
Carbonated water, concentrated orange juice, citric acid, aspartame, potassium benzoate (preserves freshness), citrus pectin, potassium citrate, caffeine, gum arabic, natural flavors, brominated vegetable oil, yellow 5 and erythorbic acid (preserves freshness).
The emboldened items are things that are not allowed (I dont know what some of the others are)

Do you know what sweetener was in your jello?

Also I noticed you state no supplements taken - we are supposed to take a multivitamin without iron daily.

Are you drinking your water too? 64 ounces plus 8 extra ounces ofr every 25 pounds of weight you want to lose are a minumum for the best results.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

since the mountain dew is out.( my favorite) I was thinking... what are your thoughts on the new ZERO sprite 0 sugar, 0cals, 0carbs. and I was looking the the atkins book (2002 ed), other than saying aspartme is out, what is the big deal about it? What do you think?

Thanks for your response in advance!! :wave
