  • Is it possible that not eating enough fat is bad....

I have been eating salads, chicken, fish and other veggies. I read somewhere that this is a high fat diet.

Should I be eating more fat to see better results? Will the diet not work if i continue on this track?

I began induction Monday 3/21 and I am 5'4 134lbs, trying to lose about 10-15lbs.

Yes, Atkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein diet. We burn fat for our fuel, and so have to eat more. During induction you should be eating 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs, most of which come from the acceptable veggies lists. I know it's hard to get your head around that, but, it works.

      Ahh ok thanks!

I am clueless when it comes to this diet. I was thinking if I ate no carbs and not that much fat..i'd lose weight faster.

I guess I'd better starting eating some beef.

First things first - read the book! It tells you how and why this way of life works.

Everything you've listed is fine but there is a limit to what you can eat. the meat is fine, just eat till you feel satiated - but not full. You don't want to stuff yourself as that would be counter productive.

Veggies definitely have a limit. Up to 3 cups salad per day OR 2 cups sald 1 cup veggie. Only veggies on the approved list though:

that is a print and cut out card of acceptable foods during induction.

Finally - but most important of all (other than reading the book) is to drink your water! you should be drinking AT LEAST 64 oz per day + an additional 8 oz for every 25 lbs you want to lose. This may seem hard to do in the beginning but you'll soon find your body CRAVING the water - mine does all the time now even though i feel like I'm drowning myself sometimes :nod

best of luck and we are all hear for you and very happy that you started with this way of eating, you will love yourself for it if you stick with it! :hug

            Hi PJ.

You've gotten some very good advice, especially about reading the book. See, there's PLENTY of misconceptions and outright lies about how to do the Atkins diet properly. I've read some real doozies like "you only eat red meat", "you have to eat eggs", "you don't eat any vegetables", "you don't have to exercise", etc.

The best thing you can do for your health is to do this diet properly by reading the book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 ed.

And there is another in the FAQs forum
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

PJ, just another fact for you: If you eat too much protein it will turn into and be stored as fat. Instead of just adding beef, you can add fat. Cook in good oils and butter, add mayo to your food and butter to the veggies.

                Good luck!

What I do to make for certain I'm getting enough fats is to add in unsalted butter to my cooking, just a little bit goes a looong way. I will put in the iron skillet a tablespoon or so of butter in it and sear my chicken thigh, breast with the skin. It comes out so crispy on moderate heat and I'm getting the quota of fat defintely like that, etc.. www.fitday.com Really helps me to see how I'm doing too.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice!

Now what about coffee. I usually have 1 cup in the morning and no more.

This week I have swtiched to decaffeinated tea..and i'm not diggin it.

If I drink a cup of coffee will it stop me from losing weight or ruin my induction?

Why not switch your morning cup to decaf coffee? (Having decaf doesn't mean you can have 10 cups a day though..lol...) I'm a one cup in the morning person as well, and I enjoy my decaf. I tried tea in the morning, and it is like drinking dishwater (I'm an evening 1 cup of tea drinker) so I hear ya here!

Caffiene can mess with your blood sugars and cause cravings so it's best to avoid it.

Well...we don't have decaf here at the office...thats why i'm drinking the tea.

So..all caffeine does is make u crave sweets?? I'm having cravings and I haven't had a cup since I started.

                        Will it affect my ketosis?

I strongly urge you to get yourself a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002 (we call it DANDR for short)
There's no substitute for reading the book, and the more you educate yourself on the 'why' behind Atkins, the better your chances for success. :yes
