  • don't feel like eating?

it is kind of a crazy feeling. My body is hungry- i can feel it- not the same feeling as being starving after over doing it on carbs- but i have an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach.
anyway, i just have no desire to eat anything- i know i have to, don't need to go into starvation mode- but i really have no desire to eat.

All the good food we get to eat following Atkins, unfortunately does trigger the wonderful satiety effect. It’s a double edged sword because it’s like the darn feeling WON’T GO AWAY
I know that feeling all too well. The short answer is this…eat anyway. Eat super small meals, if you have to take small bites every fifteen minutes in order to get something down then do it but you gotta eat. Are you exercising? A really good workout usually gets my appetite going.

I know exactly what you mean! You know you need to eat but don't find anything tempting! The morning is the worst time for me food wise - most days I really can't eat anything at all so have coffee with cream so at least I get some calories from that.

The only thing I have found works is to try eating lots of different foods and not relying on the same food choices.

            Re: don't feel like eating?

I forgot to add this point- and I think it is the most important. I am trying to train my brain to eat when I am hungry and to stop when I am full- this is how I managed to be 23 kilos overweight in the first place.
So I am listening to my body- eat when hungry, only now- I am not hungry BUT I have to eat anyway??? kind of going in circles.....I will give it another week then perhaps I will include more veg intake- move down to OWL and see if my appetite is increased.

              Re: don't feel like eating?

Personally I find that if I don't eat when I am not hungry then I will feel hungry a few hours later and then I eat. As long as you don't go all day without eating you should be OK. My opinion anyway... when I was reading on of the Atkins books, he did say that one of his clients couldn't stomach food in the morning and so had coffee and cream instead. That's good enough for me..

                Re: don't feel like eating?

I have a boiled egg for breakfast, 500mls of water and a cup of coffee with cream. this is at about 7 am. at about 8:30 I am at the gym then I come home have a shower then walk the dog for 40 minutes- so this takes me until about 11 30 or 12. from this time until late afternoon- i have no desire to eat. so i am really going on a boiled egg- not much. I just don't want to end up in a vicious cycle of eating. when i was in my late teens early twenties I was bulimic- and then later on i became a binge eater- i could toss back 4 chocolate bars in one sitting- disgusting, really.
so this is why i want to keep a healthy relationship with food- i don't want to pick up something that i have worked so hard to get over.
i think that i am simply going to have to graze for a bit. piece of cheese and some veg- or some meat and veg- until i have my appetite back.

This is what I do as well, eat only when I'm actually hungry. I got tired of forcing myself to eat on a schedule and now find that I eat my first meal around 2:00, my last before 8. Not really on 'the plan' but it works for me, at this time. I'll adjust this, of course, to fit my personal needs.

In your first post you said: "My body is hungry- i can feel it- not the same feeling as being starving after over doing it on carbs-"

                    (emphasis mine)

                    --------------------------------

Eat when you feel that your body is hungry...that's the real hunger. It sounds like your brain has turned off the "my mouth wants to eat" switch, so now it's about learning to listen to the "my body is ready to eat" signals. I haven't gotten that far...I have to keep telling my taste buds to shut up!

If you are really feel that you are that out of sync with your actual hunger, you might want to make up a meal plan of mini meals spread through the day, between three hours and four hours apart. You don't have to eat all that you plan, but at least you give your stomach the opportunity to say, "yes, I needed this now", or "nope, not really hungry, this could wait".

                      Re: don't feel like eating?

Congrats, you're in ketosis. Appetite suppression is a side effect of ketosis. But just keep in mind, don't go more than 6 walking hours without eating something. PErsonally, I had to eat every 6 hours when I wasn't very hungry because if I didn't, I would overeat come meal time.

And it's good that you are re-training your brain to relearn those hunger cues. They've done studies on infants and toddlers and found that they will only eat the amount of food they need to eat. It's only when well-meaning adults start forcing more food into them that they un-learn those natural cues and learn the bad eating habit of overeating.
