HEy everyone, i was wondering if slim jims were alright for a snack?

  • #2
    Hi Kgold,

I wouldn't know read the label, see if they have a website do a little leg work.

My feeling is they're so loaded with sodium, nitrates and other disease causing chemicals why are you even considering them?

Kgold, we've had many discussions about many different foods that you want to add to your Induction phase. I want to urge you again to please...please read your copy of DANDR

Look at the accceptable foods list again, print it out as I have been asking you too and during this time of Induction if it's not on the list? consider it a nono.

There comes a time on this diet where you just have to decide to do it and do it the right way, you have to know...Know deep down that reaching for slim jim instead of an induction food is just setting yourself up for failure.

The slim jims my DH uses for snacks once in a while have less than 1 carb and no sugar so it's fine for induction. Since there are many flavors of slim jims, check your package before eating. Hope that helps.

        slim jim

when in doubt - read the lable.

I think that I remember reading that you should NOT eat beef jerky on induction.

I suggest pepperoni for a carb free snack

I believe the brand Slim Jim does have sugars in it.

Boar's Head meats makes a good dried beef stick. Read your labels. That's truly the ONLY way to tell if ANY food can be eaten on Induction. Meats should have 0 carbs or there's something else in there (fillers, sugars, starches) that you should be eating.

The footnote in chapter 11 says: **Processed meats (this is the category I imagine slim jims and beef jerky fall in to?) , such as ham, bacon, pepperoni, salami, hot dogs and other luncheon meats—and some fish—may be cured with added sugar and will contribute carbs. Try to avoid meat and fish products cured with nitrates, which are known carcinogens. Also beware of products that are not exclusively meat, fish or fowl, such as imitation fish, meatloaf and breaded foods. Finally, do not consume more than four ounces of organ meats a day.

To make sure I called DH instead of IMing him and had him read the actual ingredients to me. He buys a canister and there are 3 sticks to a serving. He eats one, which is where he got the "less than 1 carb" to a stick. Anyway this is what he read:

            slim jim - original

serving size, 3 pieces (28 grams)
            carbs - 2 grams
            sugar - 0 from sugar

BUT, I had him read the ingredients to me and these stood at as bad in what he read: corn syrup, dextrose soy and wheat (your fillers) so I'd be really careful about eating these. Corn syrup can set off nasty cravings. By label they're legal but you'll want to be aware that these are not good to eat and in view of this list, I'd go for some other snack too!

Corn syrup and dextrose are sugars. So while the package might not have table sugar, it still contains sugar.

I would reccomend avoiding the slim jims because of the nitrates. Technically, nitrates are not allowed. Just as good, and much better for you, would be beef jerky from on organic market like Whole Foods, a nation wide chain. There you can get bacon, ham pepperoni, all nitrate free.
You can even get the safe prepared meats online if it is in your budget.

                  NOT SURE!

NOT SURE ABOUT SLIM JIMS, BUT WHEN I WAS IN WALMART THE OTHER DAY, I SAW THAT THEY HAVE THEIR BRAND OF BEEF JERKEY AND IT IS ONLY 3g NET CARBS, I CHECKED THE LABEL FOR SUGARS, SODIUM, AND ALL THE OTHER THINGS WE WATCH OUT FOR WITH THIS WOE, AND IT'S SHOULD BE A PRETTY GOOD SNACK FOOD. EACH JERKEY STRIP WAS ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE SLIM JIMS YOU CAN BUY IN THE BOX, AND A SERVING CONSISTED OF 5 STRIPS!!!! ONLY 3g NET CARBS FOR 5 STRIPS OF JERKEY????? I'M GLAD I READ THAT LABEL--THE NEXT TIME I GO GROCERY SHOPPING, I KNOW WHAT SNACK FOOD I'M PICKIN' UP. :joy

                    Re: NOT SURE!

iyshiaf, remember to check the ingredients too, not just the label. Slim Jims label said "no sugar" but it does indeed have corn syrup and dextrose.
