After my main meal at lunch and when going to bed I suffer from acid indigestion. Why is this? Could it be portion size or certain ingredients? Or is it just a common side effect of the diet?

Re: Acid indigestion
Wenglish, my heartburn went away when I made sure I got all the veggies I was supposed to have--especially the "other" vegetables. Until then, it was pretty bad.
Moving up to OWL 1 after induction and adding even more veggies will help even more.

Re: Acid indigestion
I've had really bad indigestion (daily) in the past when I eat poorly and gain weight. Within days of getting on Atkins (this is my 4th time) my indigestion always goes away and it doesn't come back. Make sure you are drinking enough water. If it doesn't go away in a few days I would go to the doctor.

While that could be indigestion, any severe chest or back pain should be checked out by your medical provider if it's worrying you. I do sometimes feel indigestion in back.
That said, I haven't had any indigestion since starting Induction...apparently this way of eating and my digestive tract are getting along just fine.

Re: Acid indigestion
Are you drinking plenty of water? If it is indigestion, it probably doesn't have to do with lunch, but with your last meal of the day. Having a larger luncheon with a lighter supper usually decreases indigestion, so it might be something specific that your body isn't enjoying.Originally posted by Wenglish View PostAfter my main meal at lunch and when going to bed I suffer from acid indigestion. Re: Acid indigestion
I don't know if this helps at all.....but it kind of feels like when you have to swallow a pill and you do it without water and it kind of gets stuck in your throat and it takes forever to work its way down....it feels like that in my chest....
I don't know if that made any more sense than my previous post...

Re: Acid indigestion
I agree with the ealier posts... my heartburn goes away when i do Atkins. However I did find out that when using spices...like Mrs. Dash, it flares up. So it could be what you are putting on my meat or in your salad that could cause a flare up.
Plus make sure you are drinking all that water...64-100 oz a day.How does one become a butterfly?

Actually, that sounds more like presbyesophagus than food related indigestion. DH (in his 40s, so while it means "old esophagus", and is generally seen in seniors, it can happen to younger adults, as well) was told that the best treatment at his age is to eat smaller bites of food, chew carefully, and slow down while eating. Just like our mothers always told us.
He still has problems following those instructions and tends to wolf his food down.
See if eating slowly helps. His mother has the same problem, and she says that it helps if she drinks a cup of warm water before meals.
If it doesn't stop, or gets worse, you should see your doctor, of course.
Hope this helps!sigpic

Re: Acid indigestion
I do drink enough water. I think drinking more water at mealtimes rather than leaving it to between meals will help. I am just confused when acid rises when I go to bed as I usually haven't eaten since 6pm. At least it's not daily so maybe I need a food diary to check if it is certain ingredients.

Re: Acid indigestion
Good idea
Being able to know what food affects you is one great outcome of doing Atkins and is one of the functions of OWL when you add items one at a time and observe what happens to you.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
