  • New to Atkins

    Hi everyone,
just wanted to drop a quick line to introduce myself. I'm a new member and today was my first day of atkins. I don't think I did very well. I skipped meals and I think I had way to many eggs and cheese. I'm sitting on my coach, trying to distract myself and avoid my craving for everything and anything. Any ideas on sweet tasting snacks (i have a huge sweet tooth)?

    Re: New to Atkins

    Hi, Susan,

    Welcome!

Just a suggestion.... for this way of eating to work, you must follow the book. It gives sample meal menus and will really help you stay on track.

The number ONE rule on induction is do NOT skip meals and do NOT let yourself get hungry. Once you are hungry, you will eat anything in sight.

There are sweet treats that you can make to get you through induction, but if you eat the foods you are supposed to eat, the cravings will go away.

You really need to understand what's involved in this before you can do it successfully.

Good luck... and I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

Hi. Today was my first day on induction, too! I started off the day good. I took my B12 and had a Bacon Ranch Salad from mcdonalds.. I ate only half. Then dinner came and my parents invited me to this mexican restaurant and I ate chicken with some avocado type hot sauce, I had like two spoonfulls of rice and beans.... and tea with artificial sweetner...I need to plan my meals.

        Hello ttugurl

Welcome to induction, do you have the book ? DANDR 2002 ?

You say its your first day on induction and you have rice and beans ?
        Both not allowed : (

Also be carefull with McDonalds salads as thier dressings can be very
        carby and added suger.

Atkins way of eating is great, but you should follow the rules more for best results,
I am doing extended induction, and I am sipping on a glass of wine so no one
is perfect : ) I just read as its your first day on induction and you had rice and beans.

Good luck !! this site is great for questions and support

A trick I've used to get past the cravings is this: If I have a craving I have to drink a whole 20 oz. bottle of water before I can eat. If I'm still hungry after the water, it's usually not as bad and I'm more willing to make a better food choice - like celery sticks with a little cream cheese. Give it a try. Not only will you be better hydrated, you'll eventually beat the nasty grasp that sugar has on you.

My other advice is to treat sugar and carbs as an addiction. It's harsh to say and even worse to hear, but we choose what we put in our mouth. Just make the decision NOT to give in. By this time next week the cravings will be gone and so will 5 pounds - I almost guarantee.

Good luck, and be sure to rely on the support you can get here. I'm 5 weeks in and 25+ pounds down (30+ overall including before I joined)...hoping to hit 35 down by the end of the week, and I have yet to miss a roll call in the morning. This board is partially responsible for my success.

Eggs are great. Eat lots. Limit the cheese, though. You have to make sure you're eating enough. My father always told me to lose weight, and that to do that meant to be hungry. Not so! Read the book, definitely. And in the meantime, check out this list: Acceptable Foods List

A "huge sweet tooth" is a sign of carb/sugar addiction. It is best not to give in to that sweet tooth. Induction is to break addictions. If you go sweet-free for a while, you'd be surprised how naturally sweet even veggies taste.

You can take L-glutamine for sugar cravings. Chocolate cravings are a sign of magnesium deficiency. Most of the population is magnesium deficient. It will also help with constipation.

Be sure to eat up your legal veggies so you get the nutrients that you are lacking due to stress of overeating carbohydrates.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Wow, sunny, it's like you read my mind! I was eating a salad yesterday and the lettuce tasted so sweet, I had go online as soon as I was done to make sure there wasn't sugar in iceberg lettuce!

Wow. I'd never really though of it like that...what great advice. I'll certainly take on board that I am addicted to sugar and must abstain with severe willpower if I'm going to succeed.

There is so much success for others on this diet that I'm really looking forward to it coming my way!
