Can anyone tell me if the Atkins Advantage Shake (1 net carb) is appropriate for the induction stage? Thanks :nod

Here at ha , we strongly advise people to not use what we call 'frankenfoods' at all during induction. Frankenfoods are things such as shakes, bars, etc that are not whole foods. Most of these products contain things like sugar alcohols that can cause many people to stall, or get severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. I know many of these foods are convenient, but we would rather you stick to the acceptable food lists only. It's only two weeks! Ultimately, the choice is yours.

Good for you! Sticking to Dr. Atkins rules for induction will rid your body of sugar cravings and you'll see some great results. You'll find lots of support here, so don't hesitate to ask any questions. Don't forget to take your measurements too! I sure wish I had when I first started.

i used the shakes as an emergency. i got sick of bacon and ham and eggs and sauage and left over hamburgers. so yes about once a week i had a shake for breakfast.

do your ketosticks and as long as you are in ketosis and losing weight, a shake every now and then won't kill you.

if you need a shake to keep you doing atkins, then by all means drink that shake

Ketostix don't tell you that you are losing weight. They only tell you that you are metabolizing fat, but they don't tell you if it's the fat on your body or the fat you ate.

Weight loss and inches lost are a much more reliable indicator of fat loss.

              Not2late makes a good point.

              however I said

"as long as you are in ketosis AND losing weight. . . "

But I can see how that might be confused.

Anyway, the ketosticks are a good guide to let you know if you are eating something with too many carbs.

the ultimate goal that I think everyone will agree with is to NOT drink a shake that often. Don't make that a part of your daily routine. Maybe once a week is okay, but realize that your breakfasts and snacks should be the tradional stuff that is on the induction approved list. trust the thousands of us who have found the plan to work.

They sell tons of stuff - but most of it is not appropriate for induction, even if it has the Atkins stamp on it.

I found that the best guide is the Blood Sugar Symptom Test in Chapter 13. I'm a slow loser and I use that test whenever I move up a rung or introduce a new food in OWL. The BSST will tell you if a food has upset your blood sugar/insulin response. And since stabilizing your blood sugar is one of the key reasons for weight loss on Atkins, it's a better indicator on how a food affects you (and your loss). For example, cantaloupes don't throw me out of ketosis, but they cause a change in my BSST.

Besides, some people don't produce enough urinary ketones for the ketostix to register, which is another reason why the ketostix aren't the greatest thing to use.....
