  • induction mayo question

I want to make a batch of egg salad, chicken salad and tuna salad and have a scoop of each for lunch at work but I do not know how much mayo I am allowed a day.
I have read the atkins essentials book regarding induction and it does not say.
ALSO I have the Atkins carb gram counter book and it gives the carbs for 1 tbs but not for say 3 or 5 tbs? what if it says 0 carbs for 1 tbs does it mean 3 tbs are still 0 carbs or what?

    Thank you

Set up an account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal. Use the food journal. Keep your percentages at 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. If you're within the proper ratios, I wouldn't worry about quantities. The food journal will figure all the percentages for you and if you're too high in fat, you'll know to cut back on the mayo or perhaps butter somewhere else. Don't follow a carb gram counter if you have a food label on what you're going to use all the time. Enter it in fitday as a custom food. You'll only have to enter it in once and you can add it daily easily into your food journal. For the best weight loss results, it's better to err on the side of caution and round up your carbs. I'd never count a store bought mayo as 0 grams of carbs.

Thank you for the suggestion. I went to fitday and set up an account but for right now the site it is too confusing and overwhelming.
I just want to make lunch.

Use the carb count on the nutrition information label for now. I and others on the board use Hellman's mayo. It doesn't give me any problems.

            Re: induction mayo question

Hi Fennela --I use Hellman's in my tuna and egg salad. What I do is put enough in (a heaping tablespoon or more) when I make it and if I need more I add more to make it smooth enough. Since I eat in wrapped in lettuce I don't need additional mayo when I make my "sandwich".

As far as counting mayo.....water is about the only thing I can think of that has true zero carbs -- I add 1 extra carb to my total count of tuna or egg salad to account for the mayo....if you use 3T I'd add 3 extra -- that way you are covered. You don't use 3 tablespoons in 1 serving do you?

When I first started FitDay gave me a little trouble also, all I wanted to do was figure out how many carbs I'd eaten and it until I got a handle on it, it seemed so difficult to plug everything in when some items didn't come up as being in the system. I have added several "custom" foods with the nutritiona values off the label on the foods. I also set up combination foods (egg salad, tuna salad, 2 egg omelet w/cheese) things that I eat regularly as "custom" foods so I can just click on 1 item and have the amounts all in one food summary. It just made things easier for me. Hope this helps - it may take a little longer to begin with but on a daily basis it saves time.

Good luck -- don't get discouraged with FitDay .... it's only a program -- don't let it get the better of you!!

            Take care

                Re: induction mayo question

A lot of us have no problem with the Hellman's - sugar is WAY down in the list. Otherwise, I think it depends where you live - read the labels at the store to see if you can find one that doesn't list sugar as one of the ingredients. Or tell us which country/state you live in and someone might have a specific suggestion.

A note on Carbs on food labels - the reason we advise rounding up is that the food companies are allowed to round DOWN. If a serving has less than .49 carbs, they can count it as zero. If you want to keep it simple, you can count it as one carb - but if its listed as zero, its prob closer to 1/2 carb - or 1 carb for 2 sevings.

Hellmann's and Best Foods are brand names that are used for the same line of mayonnaise and other food products. The Hellmann's brand is sold in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, and also in Europe, and Canada. The Best Foods brand is sold in the United States west of the Rockies.

KRAFT real Mayo also lists 0 carbs, but I'm sure that just means 0.(point) something. Has anyone heard anything different.

any questions about "0" carb items can be solved here: Low Carb Diet Tools - Hidden-Carbs Calculator. OR you can just add 1 carb for the item and be covered.

If there is sugar listed as an ingredient then there will be 'some' carbs in it.

As they are allowed to claim zero for something with less than 0.5 then maybe count each serving as being at least a third of one carb.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

These are the ingredients in Kraft Real Mayo:
Ingredients: SOYBEAN OIL, WATER, EGGS, EGG YOLKS, VINEGAR, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF SUGAR, SALT, LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA AS A PRESERVATIVE, DRIED GARLIC, DRIED ONIONS, SPICE, NATURAL FLAVOR. CONTAINS: EGG
Eggs (and egg yolks), vinegar, sugar, lemon juice, garlic, onion, spices... they all contain carbs. As Elizellen said, if it's less than 0.5 they are allowed to write a big fat zero on the package. It will not make a big difference in your carb intake if you only eat one serving, but eat more and the carbs will add up quickly.

Wow, you guys are smart! I use Hellman's too and so far so good. JulieB, I didn't realize that fact about the companies rounding down, good point, I'll watch for that, thanks. I think I'm more concerned with getting enough carbs from vegies, but Atkins is so much fun, it doesn't bother me, figuring things out. This is my 1st week of induction and I weigh-in tomorrow morning. I have also started an acct at Fitday.
