  • help! confued with the carb count for these mints/cola jellies

    Hey guys,

Basically i found these spearmint breath mints at a local shop as well as some coca cola jellies. I checked the carb count, but was confused it said carbohydrates 97.3g of which sugars nil. so what does this mean? is there 97.3g of carbs per sweet or nil?? they also sell them on www.lowcarbmegastore.com who states they are zero carb?

    hope someone can help

    many thanks

Companies are allowed to state 0 carbs if the item has less than one. That means each tiny mint could have .99 g of sugar but the label will say 0. If you pop these on and off all day, that could add up to a lot of sugar and trigger cravings for you. I would guess the cola jellies are most definitely out and I would probably stay away from the mints unless I could be sure there is absolutely no dextrose, sucrose, fructose, corn syrup or any other -ose (except sucralose) in them.

I assume you live somewhere in Europe/Australia, where the nutritional information is given per 100 g. So that would be 97.3 g of carbohydrate in 100 g of product.

It means that the carbohydrates come from sugar alcohols, which are usually not listed on things like chewing gum, mints, etc.

is there 97.3g of carbs per sweet or nil??
As I've said, it must be per 100 g. For one sweet to have 97.3 carbs, the sweet itself would have to weigh over 3 oz. That's quite a big jelly!

My advice: stay away from sweets. We see many people on the Board who are either stalled by sugar alcohols or get nasty bathroom issues. It is difficult to say how many of those sugar alcohols are metabolized by the body as sugars (net carbohydrates) and how many are not, so better avoid them all-together.
