  • Are you ever allowed to eat sweets again?

I'm buying the book tonight, I havent read it yet but I was wondering do you ever get to eat sweats again? Have a little ice cream after dinner, have desert when you go out with you hubby>?

I hope so because realistically I can not go forever with out any of those tings.

Yes, you are allowed to have three servings of sweetener (e.g. sucralose, cyclamate, saccharin, acesulfame-K) per day, regardless of the Atkins phase. How you use these, it is your choice.

Sugar never comes back! As Georgiana indicated, you may use sweeteners for treats, but sugar is never part of the Atkins way of life.

I am sure that there will be those who say that they have sugar treats occasionally... and all I can say to that, is - BEWARE! I know for a fact, that I am not able to handle even a very occasional real sugar treat. Tried it, and found out the hard way, that I will NEVER be able to do that again. I am a hard-core carb addict... and like the drug addict who can't occasionally dabble with drugs, or the alcoholic who can't have wine with dinner, I can never cross the carbage line again.

We have an excellent recipe forum on the board. Here is the link to the dessert section: Desserts - Atkins Diet

Edited to add: Here is another link to a website that a lot of us on the board use. Lots of great recipes! http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html

I have thought of this a lot also. I think that learning to say no to yourself when you are overdoing it is what matters, I cant imagine living with absolutely no sugar at all. I do think that it has to be in VERY little quantities and balanced with excercise. The problem is we can never just eat " a little". I am REALLY working at this to get there. If I can manage to go learn to eat healthier and not splurge all the time I think I will be able to do this permanently. That is my opinion anyway I respect everyone elses also. I understand the whole addiction but I really think its also a habit, overeating on everything was mine.

The general consensus is that after you lose all of your weight on atkins, that sugar will be repugnant to you. That foods with sugar will taste too sweet and you will wonder why you ever craved them.

Thinking about eating 'this' way the rest of your life is dooming yourself. Just take life one day at a time. You are going to eat this way today so that you will feel better tomorrow etc...

Your profile doesn't say how much weight you want to lose altogether... the more you have to lose, the more you will be determined to not want to see all of your hard work (sometimes longer than a year) go down the drain by binging on sugar...

Remember, sugar/carbs is how you got to where you are today... Going back to the way you were eating after the diet will end with you back where you started...

It's very hard for most people who were once overweight to eat just one of anything... if that were true, they wouldn't have been overweight to begin with

Your so right. I am on day 7 of induction and for the first time broke the rules and had one serving of cookies. I wasnt even worth it! It made my teeth feel all sugary and not good. And it didnt even taste as good as I thought. I'm happily eating a burger patty and cheese right now.
I think I can kick sugar to the curb!!!

Here, here! That's what happened to me last year around the Christmas holidays. I was doing so well. But, I thought I could handle a few day off Atkins eating sweets. Like you, I AM A CARBOHOLIC...especially a SWEETOHOLIC. But, I did not realize that carbs controlled my life (literally) until I was not able to get back on the wagon after getting off. It has taken me several months to get back to Atkins. It was so hard for me to get back to that mindset and place. But,now I am here. I don't think I can ever allow sugar back into my life either.

That's why I regained some weight Thought I could handle it, turned out, I couldn't. I started eating more carbs because I was training for a half marathon and I felt I really needed them for more energy, and I did, but once the race was over, I kept eating the bread and the pasta and then added back the sweets....I was so over them at that point, I could kick myself for doing it but that was then, this is now, I will learn from mistake

Re: Are you ever allowed to eat sweets again?

Today in DANDR I was reading about glycation.
Glycation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia if you want the technical stuff.

Basically sugar floating around in our bodies bonds to proteins, and makes them bind to each other.. which is NOT a good thing. This leads to stiffness, aging! I already knew I am a sugar free broad for the rest of my days, but this convinces me.

and are implicated in many age-related chronic diseases such as: type I and II diabetes mellitus (beta cell damage), cardiovascular diseases (the endothelium, fibrinogen, and collagen are damaged), Alzheimer's disease (amyloid proteins are side-products of the reactions progressing to AGEs), cancer (acrylamide and other side-products are released), peripheral neuropathy (the myelin is attacked), and other sensory losses such as deafness (due to demyelination) and blindness (mostly due to microvascular damage in the retina). This range of diseases is the result of the very basic level at which glycations interfere with molecular and cellular functioning throughout the body and the release of highly-oxidizing side-products such as hydrogen peroxide.

Oh no.. heck no. To eat sugar would be to consciously consume a substance that can do all this. And fructose and galactose are the worst offenders, not glucose!
