Hello. I'm Jessica and I have never tried the Atkins Diet before but it sounds great and I'm ready to give it a try. I'm trying to get as much info first before I start on Thursday. I'm 14, (5,5) and way 160 lbs :yikes . I hope to lose about 40 lbs eventually. I have a pretty good list on the basics to eat but I'm in high school and I don't know what to bring for Lunch. I can't exactly bring a pork chop and an egg, lol. Do any of you have a few ideas for snack type things I can have for lunch? Also, I'm sure I can live without sweets but what about BBQ Sauce? I can't live without it, hehe, but doesn't it have carbs in it? Also, are any fruits allowed? Thankyou for your time and I can't wait to have some replies! :hug

Hi Pet Lover, welcome aboard and glad you found us. Besure to check out the Teen Forum as you'll get a lot of great help here. Also check out the Frequently asked questions for snack and lunch box ideas.
You can do this, and since you don't have a great deal to lose, I would suggest both cardio and weight training exercise as being number one on your list of stuff to do.
Lunches can be salads and hard boiled eggs, pickles, pizza without the plate, (there is a pizza recipe called Bikergoddess pizza that is floating around that you could cook on Sunday and take to lunch in one of thoes thermal bags). Ranch dressing and celery dip, hot wings. The list is endless, just takes a bit of planning

Hi and welcome!!
Firstly, you need to learn about the Atkins diet and the best way to do that is to get a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002 (we call it DANDR for short) In there you'll find pretty much everything you need to know and more, the foods you can eat and the foods to avoid - you'll also learn the 'why' behind the diet, which is one of the most important things to know.
In the meantime, until you get your book, read the FAQ's to get yourself started...but bear in mind, it's no substitute for the book. :yes
A quick answer to the BBQ sauce is no, you can't have it because it probably has sugar in it. When you read the book you'll understand why sugar is bad and what it does to your body.
Fruits are restricted at first, but later on you can add certain fruits back in.
Again, get the book and read it...and all the best to you! Remember we're here to help.

Hi.
You're 14. So I highly recommend that you not try this or any other diet unless you are monitored by a physician. Your doctor should be seeing you at least monthly to check your weight loss rate (to make sure you aren't losing too quickly), you blood work and other things. See, you're still growing and developing, so your nutritional needs are very different from us older folks.
I also suggest that you look into the low carb plan described in the book Feed your kids well by Fred Pescatore, MD. Dr. Pescatore was the Associate Director of the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine during much of the 1990s. The diet described in his book is the diet that the Atkins Center used for children and teens (at least that's what Dr. Atkin's introduction in the book says). This diet is much more nutritionally suitable for a growing teen than the Atkins Diet.
Good luck to you in your weight loss. And please see a physician for guidance and monitoring during this weight loss process.
