  • Recommendations on Supplements & Vitamins

Hey everyone, new to the board here, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on some good vitamin brands to look out for. I was stupid enough to purchase Centrum "Carb Assist" vitamins but I was too lazy to read the massive list of ingredients until I got home and found that it has Starch & GLUCOSE (omgz). I was a bit ticked off, how could they advertise "For your low carb lifestyle" on the bottle when it has 2 of the deadly sins of Atkins in the ingredients!

Any recommendations would be much appreciated

          Hi Yakamo, :wave

          Welcome aboard!

Don't feel bad the "I have to learn to read the ingredient labels" lesson doesn't come naturally to most of us.

There's no shortage of vitamins and supplements out there for low carb lifestyles - the only brand specifically designed for Atkins are well of course Atkins.

Other brands aren't under any obligation to follow any of the guidelines that make Atkins the oldest, most successful and healthiest WOL (way of life) there is.

Good Atkins friendly, no Iron Multivitamins are made by Natures Bounty, Natures Best, Puritan, TwinLabs and The Vitamin Shoppe among many others. As you learn more about vitamins and supplements don't underestimate their power - they can accelerate your weightloss and more importantly improve your overall physical and emotional well being.

At some point you might want to add the following:
          • *Super B&C Complex
*Flax or Fish Oil - a must, it helps to burn fat and is a source of omega 3 oils
            *L-Carnitine

At some point you might want to pick up a copy of Dr Atkins Vita-Nutrient Solution, it's a great companion to DANDR in addition to being a great and informative read.

And don't forget - there's an entire Forum right here on ADBB devoted to vitamins and nutrition.

          Welcome Aboard!

            centrum

for medical reasons i have to take some extra vitamin k, and i cannot get it from pork meat because of other reasons... and dont want to get inyections because is for more severe conditions, i have to take centrum vitamins, i took the regular bottle, no low carb labeled, i live in greece and low carb things are non exixtent... for one hand is better because i stick to the real foods.
anyway, how much starch and glucose could 1 pill a day have? i know all about the induction - i am on day 13.... if someone knows a vitamin k suplement without all those forbidden ingredients i would love to hear...

thanks a lot and keep all the good work!

I can understand your problem. I live in Japan and its no so much not knowing what is in the pill it is NOT KNOWING WHATS IN THE PILL. LOL

So, saying that. Check out vitacost.com as it has some very good information on pills and vitamins, etc etc. Tom, the owner of this board also sells some Atkins friendly supplements and he will gladly send then around the world for you if need be. Just email him first about costs etc.
And let him know if there are any restrictions.
But as always your health comes first so if there are carbs, just remember to count them as 1 at least to cover yourself. I agree that its probably not a big issue and I would continue taking them, as llong as your losing weight and then next time see if you can find some without the starch etc.
              Happy low carbing
