  • I Love my Tea and Chewing Gum!.....

Hi, I've been doing atkins now for 1 week and lost nearly a stone, but i don't know if i'm doing it right? I have 2 questions which i would like to ask this knowledgable forum..

1 - Can i have milk in my tea, it contains about 5gCarbs per 100ml so technically if i stick to 100ml a day i'm still left with 15. I find Cream too thick and sickening, not to mention fatty.

2 - I have searched and searched for an answer to this and have found no defintinve answer.. I Love my Sugar Free Chewing Gum, It contains 61g Polyol Carbs per 100g? DOES THIS MEAN I CAN'T CHEW IT?? PLEASE HELP ME!!!

    Thanks for any advice

No milk in induction! Sorry! And hey.... fatty is GOOD on atkins. If you dislike the cream, fine, but don't dis fat! Fat is your friend on Atkins.. repeat it with me!

Listen, a little sugar free gum is almost certain not to derail you, and if you choose the ones with xylitol, which is specifically good for your teeth too, you should have nothing to worry about. Moderation in all things of course, but

I second Momtomany1!! I have been derailed by sugar free gum! Chew on a straw if you have to. I've done that too! Figure out waaaaaay later if it's something you can handle. Induction is NOT the time to keep bad habits. It's the best time to release them. I waited until I was past induction and couldn't do it. Maybe near goal but who wants to delay that, anyway???

Atkins is not only about being under xx g of carbohydrate per day. Besides eating only foods that are on the list of foods acceptable during Induction, you should make sure over half of the net carbohydrates you are consuming come from the required three cups of vegetables.

There are sticky threads in the Atkins Diet 14-Day Induction forum with the rules of Induction and the list of "legal" foods. You would also benefit a lot from reading the book -- on this board, we go by Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, 2002.

Polyols (or sugar alcohols) are tricky -- they either cause you bloating, gas, diarrhea, stomach cramps... or they are metabolized by your body, in which case you should count them as net carbs. So you can 1) consume them and spend the day in the bathroom, 2) consume them and count them as net carbs (remember the veggie rule though!) or 3) don't eat anything with sugar alcohols. Personally, I prefer 3).
