  • Goals

I used to listen to this podcast series about weight loss from a psychological perspective and found a lot of what they said very helpful. One of the things that I found most helpful was the idea of creating goals in two categories: things we want to move towards and things we want to move away from. This way, even as you reach the towards goals you still have the away from goals to keep you motivated to continue. So, in the spirit of openess and sharing here are mine:

    Towards Goals:
    1. Wear a lovely wedding gown and feel good about the way I look in it
    2. Be able to sit in any seat, anywhere and not SQUEEZE
    3. Go to a job interview and not worry about their impressions based on my weight
    4. Be able to run/walk/skip/jump without getting winded
    5. Shopping at a regular store on a regular basis
    6. Be able to swim consecutive laps in the pool

    Away From Goals:
    1. Worrying about rude people's comments on public transit
    2. Feeling frustrated when none of my clothes fit because they are too tight
    3. Walking with friends to lunch and getting winded
    4. Staying away from social events because of embarassment
    5. Not being able to fit into the CT/PET scan machine because I'm too big
    6. Having a doctor blame everything on my weight instead of taking my complaints and pains seriously

So those are my towards and away from goals. What are yours?

    Re: Goals

    Great Thread!

My toward goals were similar to yours---except the wedding gown thing. Instead, I wanted to not be like the rest of my family. You see, on boths sides of my family, we have diabetes, strokes, heart disease and all the things associated with that. I didn't want to be on medications for the rest of my life or hooked up to a dialysis machine, etc.

      Re: Goals

I'll do it the other way around and start with "away from" goals.

      Away from goals:
      1. I used to be a size 14-16 in Germany (12-14 in the US), which meant that sometimes I had to shop in plus size stores. Regular sizes normally stop at 14 here and plus sizes begin at 16.
      2. Same as Megs'... we have everything from diabetes to heart disease in my family.

      Toward goals:
      1. Play tennis better/longer.
      2. Run a 10k (or more).
      3. Be comfortable wearing a skirt or shorts. I'm not a beach person, but looking better in a bathing suit should probably be added here too.
