  • Induction Q

Okay, this is probably my 4th time on Atkins and I have always lost weight fast in the induction. I do have times where I feel light headed and wondering if this is due to not having enough carbs or not drinking enough water. I usually eat something with a small amount of carbs that is on the list right away when this happens and the light headedness goes away but it seems like it correlates with how much in ketosis I am. The more in ketosis I am the more of that light headed feeling I get. Maybe I am wrong? Anyway, just wanted to hear from those of you that might know why this happens.

Also, wondering what is the expectation for the amount of weight loss during the induction. Wondering if everyone is different and that is the only thing to consider or if there is an expectation that a person should lose for example 10lbs in 2 weeks.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Re: Induction Q

You cannot be more or less in ketosis... you're either in ketosis or you aren't. How far into Induction does this happen? 4 days, 7 days, everyday? Are you eating your vegetables and spreading them between meals? Are you going without eating for more than 6 hours? Drinking enough water?

The amount of weight one loses during Induction depends on many factors like age, degree of metabolic resistance, amount of weight one has to lose, etc. The typical loss is 5-10% of the weight one has to lose.

Since these are Induction questions, I've moved this forum to the "Atkins Diet 14-Day Induction" forum.

      Re: Induction Q

I've been feeling light headed for the last 3 days, as well. (I'm on day 19 and doing extended induction)

I never had this problem the other times I went low carb, but I'm chalking it up to being way more strict on my induction foods this time around.

I'm drinking tons of water, eating quite regularly and trying to do a better job of spreading my carb intake out over the entire day.

Post your typical menu too. Sometimes people make the mistake of not eating enough---enough food and/or enough carbs.

          Taking vitamin supplements too?

Most people feel light headed in the first dew days. It's not something that should start after two weeks.

            Re: Induction Q

I am eating enough veggies and drinking a ton of water. It does seem like if I go for about 3-4 hours without eating or drinking anything I get lightheaded. And yes it is surprisingly easy to not eat enough because you do not feel hungry on this diet! Amazing!!

I have only ever been on the induction part of Atkins and only for 2 weeks, usually less, so the light-headedness usually happens between the 1-5th day. This time, I will add, this is going to be a way of life for me because I want to be trim and feel good about wearing clothes and bathing suits!!!!!!

When I say more or less in ketosis, I am basing it on the color of my ketones on the sticks. Sometimes it is faint pink and other times it is darker pink.

Thank you all for responding and giving me info. This site rocks!!

As a prior poster mentioned, there are not degrees of ketosis. The differering color of the sticks is a function of your water intake. The more water, the less intense the color. Less water, the more you may be dehydrated.

                        Re: Induction Q

Stick with it, despite the light headedness...your body is going through a huge adjustment. I have it in induction too and I get all nervous thinking I'm having a heart attack or a stroke. I never am. I am doing this right this time, I saw my doctor and had all my labs drawn...it's smart to do because you could be getting hypoglycemic. Just a thought.
