  • im new please help

    Hi all,

im new to the site and really need some advice and help on the atkins diet.

I have 2 stone to loose and feel that the only way left is the atkins diet.

I am aware of the side effects but am willing to accept these to combat the weight.

I have looked at so many websites that im exhausted!!!!

I have an idea in my head that i can have bacon, eggs, chicken and salad and this is all i would really eat anyway.

Not sure what fruits i can have, how much and how often.

Was reading about the net carbs business and am so confused with the 20g business.

Im not good with maths or anything like that and just want it to be all so simple in my head so i know what i can have, how much and how often for the induction phase!!!!!

    please please help!!!!!!! x

    Welcome to the Board.

    What are the side effects?

Instead of looking at websites, you should read the book. I would recommend you "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" (2002), which is the book we go by on this Bulletin Board.

The list of foods acceptable during Induction can be found in the book and also here: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html
Once you move to OWL, you will begin to add back into your diet more vegetables, milk, yogurt, fresh cheeses, nuts, berries, legumes, fruits, starchy vegetables, whole grains, and you can even have alcohol once you reach OWL Rung 5.

Not sure what fruits i can have, how much and how often.
Most fruits (except, for e.g., avocado) are not allowed during Induction... Again, check the list above.

Once you move to OWL, you will add berries back in OWL Rung 4 and fruits with a higher glycemic index in OWL Rung 7. As with all foods you add in OWL, you will have to add them in 5 net carb amounts. In Pre-Maintenance, you will add them in 10 net carbs amounts.

Was reading about the net carbs business and am so confused with the 20g business.
Net carbs are total carbs minus dietary fiber and sugar alcohols. Are you in the US? In the US, you have the total carbohydrates and the amount of dietary fiber on the nutritional label. You will have to do the math to find the net carbs. If you are in the UK, the carbs listed on the label are net carbs, so no math required.

To track your foods, you can use of the several online tools available. Many members here use FitDay and DailyPlate. You'll find them if you do a Google search.

      Hi and welcome.

The best advise I can give to you is to read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition. Check your local library, because they may have a copy of it.

Read it from cover to cover, before you start. I advise that because you need to make sure if Atkins is appropriate for you. And also, there's PLENTY of lies and myths about Atkins on the web and in magazines. Over the years, I've read everything from "you can't eat vegetables on Atkins" to "you'll never eat any carbs again for the rest of your life".

Even the information you'll find here on this board is not a substitute for the book. It only supplements what's written in it.

So please read the book, decide if Atkins is right for you, before you decide to go on it.

        Hi Wana,

sounds like you have some misconceptions about Atkins. There is a lot more to it than eating salad and meat and the "side effects" you have heard about. You may find that this way of eating is a lot more about eating healthy than you realized and that your side effects are more positive than what you have heard. Yes the Induction phase has a couple of rough days as your body detoxs from sugar. Yes, you have stinky urine and breath. But you will also probably have increased energy, less acid reflux, better sinuses, less bloating, better blood sugar and after the initial few months, better cholesterol--not to mention weight loss.

I know it sounds like an old song, but if you mean to do this and stick with it, get the book and read it. There is no substitute for really knowing what you are doing in this and the more you understand about why Atkins works, the easier it is to follow it.
