Egg 1 carb , Say What! Grr these damn snacks

  • Egg 1 carb , Say What! Grr these damn snacks

    Okay i was just reading around here and i noticed someone mention a hard boiled egg as like 0.6 carb.
    I was under the impression that eggs where carb free, then i looked it up and all the nutrition sites i see say 1 carb.
    This is very upsetting news to me, I eat a lot of hard boiled eggs because i tend to crave taste or i get really bored, bad combo.
    The fact that I'm a stay at home dad with three kids, 17 month , 11 year and 13 year old, doesn't help. If i could stay away from the house i wouldn't even bother eating.
    Since i have lost my job i gained about 50 lbs. I used to be a muscular 170lbs 5.6 which is overweight but was mostly muscle i would be on my feet 18 hours a day as a tradesman climbing ladders and installing building products all day.
    Anyways im rambling.
    My point is everything i do to stay away from the carbs just seems to slap me in the face with surprises.

    For instance Hard salami and cream cheese.
    One site says hard salami has no carbs another says it has 1 carb per ounce.
    The deli section has 2 version of salami, which both have carbs.
    I Look in the packaged sandwich meat section and the ones that say no carbs i don't really trust.

    I tried the hard salami and cream cheese recently!
    OMG it took me back to when i was a kid.

    When i crave taste or I'm still hungry in between meals.
    Its usually hard boiled eggs, Recently Cream cheese with hard salami , and pork grinds.

    I'm usually hungry 2 hours after every meal.
    Like for instance I eat a 6 oz steak, 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast ( i don't eat breakfast till about 10 - 11 am.)

    2 Hours later ( 12 - 1 pm) I eat lunch. A chef salad, 3 cups of lettuce with a few various veggies, 2 hard boiled eggs, a little shredded cheese. Ranch dressing.
    Or lunch will be Just a few hard boiled eggs with some pork grinds or cream cheese and salami
    Maybe 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours later,(3:30 - 5 pm) i need a snack.
    2 hours later, (6pm - 8pm) i usually eat dinner.
    A (6 -10 oz) Steak with some, jalapenos and ranch dressing.
    about 3 hours later, around 9 or 10 at night, i snack.

    This is my Day everyday.
    I lost 15 lbs during induction.
    Its been about 10 days now i haven't gained or lost anything.
    I fluctuate from 20 carbs up 31 carbs a day.
    I know i am only supposed to move up 5 carbs at a time.
    I'm trying to but it seems like once i pass 20 carbs i end up getting 4carbs + 2 + 1 for this or that and i cant seem to make it add up right.

    I also messed up right after induction
    I bought a tub of carb smart Vanilla Ice Cream.
    I couldn't stay out of it at one point i think i ate 20+ carbs of ice cream in one day just to finish it and get it out of the house.
    My wife didn't know and brought home a chocolate carb smart version and i tried to get them to eat most of it but i also had about 20 carbs of that over 2 days.

    So anyways I'm out of induction but im trying to keep myself close to 20 carbs a day again.
    My biggest carb problem right now is the damned salami and creamed cheese. ( which i have never ate more then 3 oz of cream cheese in a day 6 g carbs)
    But the salami adds up as well.
    So in a day i could end up snacking up to 12 carbs just in Salami & Cream cheese. ( which is sometimes all i have, just for lunch)

    Now back to the whole reason i started this thread , Those damn little devils ! The eggs.
    I like to pickle eggs. I pickle 18 eggs and it lasts me about 5-7 days depending.
    Now that i have been lifted out of my blissful state of being ignorant and thinking, eggs are carb free. Then learning they have a carb each.
    I'm just depressed and feel a little defeated.
    Like no matter what alternative i try to keep myself happy with this diet, mostly my snacking alternative.
    There's always a throwback or hidden punch somewhere.

    So anyways that's me and where i am at 10 days after induction.
    My cravings vary sometimes I'm content, sometimes I'm not.
    Sometimes I'm always hungry sometimes I'm not hungry at all.
    Idle hands usually feed me when I'm not hungry and just wanna taste something.

    Okay well that's me and this is where i am.

    Looking for some tasteful 0 carb snack ideas

    Yes, eggs have carbs. The yolks have carbs because that is what the developing chicken uses as a source of food. So the yolk is high fat with some amount of carbohydrate.

    You should avoid emotional eating. Eating out of boredom is a type of emotional eating. So rather than eating, you should re-train your brain to do something else. Perhaps take a walk around the block, or do some strength training, whenever you feel this boredom.

    Again, if you aren't hungry and you are feeling bored, instead of eating----get moving! At work, I have a set of 5 pound hand weights and resistance bands. When I have a mini-break (or whenever I get frustrated with all the office BS), I get out the weights or the bands and do some exercise.

    All the more reason to stop the emotional eating and start doing exercise instead of eating legal foods.

    If your 17 month old isn't at daycare, you can take him/her out to the park where you both can spend some time playing (burns calories for you and most importantly you get to spend Dad-time with your child.) Also, you could put your child in a stroller and push him/her to the park. That's more exercise for you and it gets you out of the house and your mind off the emotional eating.

    What you need to do is to look the foods up either in a carb counter book or a website, like fitday.com or the USDA Nutrient Database. That way you won't have any unpleasant surprizes.
    For instance Hard salami and cream cheese.
    One site says hard salami has no carbs another says it has 1 carb per ounce.

    It really depends on the individual product. Some cream cheeses have 3 carbs per serving, some have 1 carbs per serving. So you need to read the package of these products.

    Also you need to read the ingredients. Look for added sugars (dextrose, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, etc.) That will tell you if there really is any sugar in the products.

    You might also want to use less processed foods. Salami and deli meats are high in sodium. High sodium isn't typically good for you. So instead of snacking on those meats, make extra meat for dinner and eat the leftovers for your lunch/snacks instead. For example, bake a bunch of chicken legs and save some for tomorrow's lunch.

    Carefully review ALL the ingredients to ALL the foods and beverages you are eating/drinking.

    Craving food between meals can be due to:

    1. Not eating enough during the meal.
    2. Not eating enough fat.
    3. Eating a food that is causing cravings.

    So review your foods.Ketosis/lipolysis is a natural appetite suppressant. So something is going on with you that is causing you to crave in spite of that appetite suppression.

      Thanks , i will have to look into another routine that works better with this diet.
      Food is a little more of challenge everything these days is expensive and so far the atkins diet has raised my side off the grocery bill.
      Which i have tried to keep it simple.
      It seems like even hamburger is twice what it used to be 5 years ago.
      I did notice my ketosis strips where as dark as they could get no matter what time of the day i would test them.
      But as soon as i went out of induction they faded and even sometimes didnt even change out of the beige zone.

      I definitely will be trying a new strategy to get out of this craving and boredom.

        But it probably has lowered your other spending on 'junk food' I know we spend far less on those sort of snacks etc so the slightly higher 'real food' bill isn't such a concern.
        Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

          Family of 5, they still have all the same foods i used to eat.
          The only thing that has changed is im buying things for me to eat that i hadnt bought before.

            Ted, was just wondering exactly how different does your family eat? Before my husband started low carbing he didn't eat much different then me. He had a sandwich, I had the filling, He had speghetti, I had the sauce. Or we'd have meat and veggies and he'd have a potato. If anything I was buying HIM special food

              All of there food is everything i can't touch.
              We are currently taking over a pizza shop and the wife has been in the pizza business for 15 years.

              Example dinner:
              Pork chops , Corn , Stuffing , Mash potatoes.

              1 Item for me , Pork chop.

              The me stuff is special sauces that are low in carbs.
              The higher amounts of meat. Hamburger is twice the price it was 5 years ago.
              I bought like 5lbs of steak to cut up myself for steaks, it was $13 a pound.
              The items for just the salad alone a week are like $25 atleast.
              That's Lettuce , Tomato, cheese, Eggs, and deli meat slice.
              One head of lettuce I'm guessing makes about 5 cups.

                I noticed that you don't really spread out your veggies when you eat them. And you have that infamous ranch dressing. When my husband was on Atkins, before he left for the Army his portions of meat were WAY higher than that. A typical Atkins day for him was:

                Breakfast
                3 scrambled egg omelette with 1/2 cup of spinach with shredded cheese and a clove of garlic. 3 pieces of nitrate free bacon, 3 glasses of water

                Lunch: 1/2 cup of spinach with 3 thinly sliced grape tomatoes, 1 thin slice of a scallion a sprinkle of Mexican shredded cheese and garlic vinaigrette dressing and whatever meat I had made for dinner, in one case 6 oz. of pork tenderloin, water.

                Dinner: 1 cup of mixed dark greens, 1/2 cup of cucumbers 1 egg chopped on top of the salad, 1 piece of crumbled bacon, garlic vinaigrette, pork tenderloin 6oz. And for dessert sometimes he would have 2 thinly sliced strawberries with a dallop of homemade whipped cream.

                I ate the same things, but just not as much and I would leave the strawberries and whipped cream off because I don't crave sweets like he does.

                The first two weeks though, he ate much more meat, but after a while, he was eating a little bit more than I was in the meat department. And I had to make him eat because he wouldn't be hungry.

                  All you have to do to that menu is add an Induction friendly vegetable. In fact, the ENTIRE family can eat that vegetable in place of corn, or stuffing or the potatoes.

                  You'll have to watch those sauces. Many of them have added sugars. So ditch them, imo.

                  Also, your amounts of meat that you eat shouldn't be "high". ATkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein diet. In fact, excessive dietary protein will be converted to glucose, what isn't immediately used will be stored as body fat. So you do yourself no favors overindulging in the protein department.

                    Okay if i went with the typical induction menu, from 1999 version.
                    Would this be okay, Trying to keep it simple, If i start doing a bunch of different recipes then all that will on my mind is food. Anyways here's the typical Induction menu from 1999 copy of Atkins.

                    Breakfast:
                    Eggs, scrambled or fried,with bacon, ham, sugarless sausage, or canadian bacon.
                    Decaffeinated coffee or tea.

                    Lunch:
                    Bacon Cheeseburger, no bun.
                    Small tossed salad.
                    Seltzer water.

                    Dinner:
                    Shrimp Cocktail with mustard and mayo
                    Clear Consomme
                    Steak, roast, chops, fish or fowl.
                    Tossed Salad (choice of dressings)
                    Diet Jell-O with a spoonful of whipped, artificially sweetened heavy cream.


                    Minus the Shrimp Cocktail and Jell-O i could probably eat that menu 75% of the week.

                        Is that Jell-O sweetened with aspartame? If so, I'd avoid it since that's a known staller. You can make your own with unsweetened gelatin and Splenda (I'm sure Linda's site has a recipe or two).

                            I like the shrimp i just couldn't eat it everyday P

                            If it wasn't enough to keep me full from meal to meal, i would still have the in between when i got cravings Pickled egg, Pork grinds or possibly some other no/low carb alternative.
