Is the evil here the caffeine or the coffee itself? I know that the book allows for decaf, but I've seen some people say that even decaf gives them problems.

    Thanks for any info!

If you look at the Beverage Footnote in your copy of DANDR 2002, you'll see that Dr. Atkins didn't allow caffeine on the diet due to its effect on blood sugar.

Granted, there will be people who say they drink coffee all the time and it hasn't affected their weight loss. But the question is did they do Atkins without caffeine and compare those results with their caffeinated Atkins. If not, then there is no way for them to conclude that the caffeine hasn't affected their weight loss.

Decaf coffee isn't 100% caffeine free. It's something like a 10-25% caffeine content. So if you are caffeine sensitive, that small amount in "Decaf" might be enough to effect you.

      Re: Coffee

Even decaf was a problem for me. But, I'm not sure if it was the coffee itself or the amount of artificial sweetener and cream I used to make it tasty

You only know if it affects you if you cut it out and see what happens. The nice thing, for me, is that it might slow my weight loss but I don't gain weight. So, when I get to maintenance, I can start enjoying coffee again.

The other thing is many of us are used to drinking coffee as a breakfast replacement. Now that I don't drink coffee, I'm eating more eggs and veggies.

        Re: Coffee

For me decaf is as much a problem as regular coffee. It gives me the munchies. Scary stuff now that I discovered it, it explains so much of my pre-Atkins eating habits.
