Re: Excercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
Thats common sense, isn't it?
Well for the sake of arguement then...
when I was working out 2 hours a day I lost a pound a day for the first 4-5 days i did it.
when I work out 45-60 minutes a day I lose anywhere between 1-3 pounds a week on average, depending on the week. I've lost 3.8 before, and i've also lost only a pound. it just depends when you're bodys ready to let go of it, how much water you're drinking, and if you're over exherting yourself too much.
NOT working out, on a good week i'll lose a pound every 5 days. On a bad one, i'll lose a pound every 2 weeks.
for the last three weeks I've been on a no-workout rule from my doctor. 3 weeks ago I weight 207. I went between 206-209 for 2 weeks. This last week i finally was allowed to work out a little again. i was 206.something last wednesday, 205.2 saturday, and 204 now that its thursday.
*DISCLAIMER*
I DONT advocate working out 2 hours a day if you've just started. I did it just to see if I could, and I could only really keep it up for a about 7-9 days before I had to slow it down. Don't read "omg she lost a pound a day" then go kill yourself on the treadmill. an injury isn't worth it!F/24/5'10"

Re: Excercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
You're burning fat for fuel. The more fuel you use, the more fat you burn, therefore no exercise is bad.
Just my two cents, and observations from last time I did Atkins. What I do:
Elliptical gym machine 1 hr Tue-Sun
At 320, switch to cycling on my Trek 500
2 filtered containers water/day
Daily salads/veggies
Goals:
Stop needing High Blood Pressure meds - DONE!
Workout in a XXXL shirt - DONE!
Workout in a XXL shirt
Workout in a XL shirt
270 on the scales

I totally subscribe to the whole "diet and excercise go hand in hand" theory and have always included excercise on a regular basis.
But considering this diet is like no diet before - I am purely interested in excercise's effects on the Atkins diet - good to see it has positive results as well.

Oh, that's an easy question. Exercise helps not only increase my metabolism but I look good in my skin too

According to Dr. Atkins, exercise is non-negotiable. So there is no way around it on his diet.

the last time I did atkins I didnt really work out at all, and even when i got down from 212 to 180 I was still all rollypolly and probably could have fit into a size smaller if i'd taken the time to tone up my muscles.F/24/5'10"

DANDR, Chapter 15, page 191:Originally posted by Flashsa View PostI would like to now what sort of weight loss you experience with or without excercise and whether a lack of excercisng affects your weight loss?
DANDR, Chapter 22, page 286:[...] exercise is not optional. It's an integral part of doing Atkins. It's often neglected and sometimes quietly scorned, but if you think you're doing the program and you're not exercising, you're not doing the program.
Since exercise is a mandatory part of Atkins, I began exercising from the day I started Atkins, although then I was doing less than I am now. Regardless, I was exercising, so I don't know what my weight loss would have been if I had sat at the desk or on the couch all day.If you're not getting regular exercise, you aren't following the Atkins Nutritional Approach. It's that simple.
In any case, weight (i.e. number on the scale) means absolutely nothing. What is important are inches and your health, both of which will move in the right direction with exercise. Exercise makes one look good naked and fit into a smaller size even at a higher weight, lowers cholesterol, reduces body fat, reduces stress, improves sleep and concentration, burns calories, strengthens your heart and lungs, gives you more self-confidence, improves your mood... and I probably forgot some of the benefits. So why would one not want all these things for him/her?

Re: Excercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
Last time I did Atkins (pre-pregnancy), I lost 30 pounds, was 189 pounds and a UK size 16 (US 14) - I only did cardio. This time, I have been weight training too and hit a size 16 when I was 199 pounds. I am now 193 pounds and almost in a size 14 (US 12) although I am four pounds heavier than my previous lowest weight. So my summary is - weight training exercise is key for inches lost, muscle tone, posture and feeling great

Re: Excercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
You probably already got your answer, but I'll add just to motivate myself, if nothing else.
I do about an hour every day of cycling (outdoors, I hate gyms) at 15-25 mph, or cross-country skiing. Kayaking, hiking or downhill skiing on weekends keeps me from getting bored. I'm lucky I live where I do. I'm losing about 6 pounds per week. I'd probably lose more if I weight trained, but I get bored very easily. What I do seems to work pretty well as muscle-building, but I could probably work on core muscles more.
Anything is better than sitting around eating Cheetos. Even a walk around the block or an extra 200 feet to your office door. "Move it to lose it" is my way of thinking!
And exercise keeps me from getting hungry, fatigue, sweets cravings, depression, and all that focus on what's in the fridge. Get out and shake your booty!
Sorry to go all cheerleader on you, but I'm a fanatic about exercise!

Re: Excercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
I recently increased my exercise significantly, going for longer (one hour vs 30 minutes every day) and much more strenuous exercises than I had been doing.
I found that my loss actually slowed down a little bit. But I know it is from adding muscle because the new regimen is A LOT easier today than it was when I increased a week ago. I expect that weight loss will accelerate as my body finishes adjusting to the new regimen and the muscle gain slows down.
I agree with Phil about the appetite thing. I have noticed a big increase in my appetite since increasing my exercise.Last edited by Jarrod; August 28, 2009, 11:23 AM.

Re: Exercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
The first time I was on Atkins I lost about 40 of the 60 pounds before I began to exercise regularly. You will lose weight without it. For me as I lost I felt motivated to exercise.
Your best exercise is going to be resistance training as each pound of lean muscle burns about 60 calories a day. This Atkins go around, I am waiting until the beginning of week 2 since that first week is a little blah with the "Atkins flu", headache, etc. Once that first boost of energy hits it is a lot easier to be consistent.

Re: Exercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
I think moderate exercise is key. i used to be a gym fanatic to burn off all of the carbs and i ate a lot. right now i am mostly lifting weights and doing heavy housework and gardening for exercise. i find when i do that it really helps to curb my appetite. i have to guard against over exercise.

Re: Exercise - How many of you do and how many don't?
What???? An exercise thread that I have not participated in yet. Incredible
So I will add my thoughts:
Exercise rocks. It is one of the things from the Atkins journey that I am so happy about. I did not exercise before Atkins. I moved - and liked it but really just exercise I did not do. But since starting this new road to health and happiness I decided to try it. I thought I would not like it. But I LOVE it. It has really helped with how I feel. It makes me pretty happy. I have met new people this way and expanded my horizons. I still cannot believe that it took me 40 some years to discover yoga. It is an incredible experience. So I am into trying everything - because who knows there may be other things out there that I just would love to do. I have discovered a few things that I do not care about so I don't do those.
What I find cool about the exercise is how it has toned by body. I am a very flabby person (always been) but there are some tone here and there now. Weird. I like it.
