  • Are mixed frozen veggies bad?

I just put mixed frozen vegetables (peas, carrots, lima beans and corn) into my fitday and it said 47.7 carbs....whaaaat? I thought we were supposed to eat veggies. I buy frozen or canned because they last longer.

Those are very starchy vegetables. You cannot eat them on induction at all. The vegetables you can eat on induction are:

You can have two to three cups per day of these vegetables. They are called "salad" vegetables in the book

    alfalfa sprouts
    daikon
    mushrooms
    arugula
    endive
    parsley
    bok choy
    escarole
    peppers
    celery
    fennel
    radicchio
    chicory
    jicama
    radishes
    chives
    lettuce
    romaine lettuce
    cucumber
    moche
    sorrel
These salad vegetables are high in phytonutrients and provide a good source of fiber.

    Other Vegetables
You can have one cup per day of these veggies if you only had two cups salad vegetables

The following vegetables are slightly higher in carbohydrate content than the salad vegetables:

    artichoke
    celery root
    pumpkin
    artichoke hearts
    rhubarb
    asparagus
    chard
    sauerkraut
    bamboo shoots
    collard greens
    scallions
    dandelion
    snow peas
    bean sprouts
    dandelion greens
    spaghetti squash
    beet greens
    eggplant
    spinach
    broccoli
    hearts of palm
    string or wax beans
    broccoli rabe
    kale
    summer squash
    brussels
    kohlrabi
    tomato
    bean sprouts
    leeks
    turnips
    cabbage
    okra
    water chestnuts
    cauliflower
    onion
    zucchini
If a vegetable, such as spinach or tomato, cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Your vegetables do not have to be fresh but I have to be on one of these two lists.

There are frozen vegetable blends that are legal for Induction, such as the broccoli-cauliflower frozen blend and the zucchini-summer squash blend.

Oh don't worry. You are just getting started. I think I had pasta first day I thought I started. Now that was pretty dumb.
I recommend getting the book. It is very helpful.
          Do you like fish? eggs?

Re: Are mixed frozen veggies bad?

If you are really going to do low carb, protein and fat is going to be a major part of your diet so you will have to find out what you can do for protein.

              Fish sticks - hmmmmm
They are breaded and have fillers so obviously out. We try to eat a lot of whole food most of us. It is easier to know what we are eating and it is healthier.

              Keep us updated.

Re: Are mixed frozen veggies bad?

tmo967, you're not dumb at all - just learning new things. Peas, carrots, lima beans and corn are not allowed on induction, but there are plenty of other frozen veggies and veggie mixes you can try.

Also, you don't have to force yourself to eat lots of meat. Atkins is not high protein, it's high fat, moderate protein, and low carbs. There are a number of sites that can help you determine your protein needs - Use Our Nutrition Calculator to Break Through Stalls! is one of them (not affiliated in any way).

But to keep it simple, Liv's advice it excellent: get a copy of the book, 2002 version preferred, and read!

                Best of luck!

Re: Are mixed frozen veggies bad?

I dont know why they put so much sugar into frozen veges. I bought a pack quickly on the way home from the gym for something quick and easy to cook. When I read the nutritional information, it was loaded with sugar!
I went back to eating a salad instead.

Re: Are mixed frozen veggies bad?

Vegetables have sugar naturally - sometimes nutritional labels list it. What you need to get into the habit of really reading is the INGREDIENT label - if sugar is listed there, then you avoid it.

tmo967, that was the same reaction i had before i started Atkins. i thought it's gonna be tough...but just a gentle suggestion - try to browse through the threads where recipes are posted, it will give you A LOT of ideas!!! that's what i did! cos sometimes, because of our mindset, we tend to stick to the idea that it's hard, right? with the recipe thread, i realized there's a whole bunch of things that i could ACTUALLY eat! you'd be surprised, i tell you!

                      good luck!
