  • OWL or extended induction

    Hello All

I know many many people have asked this question, but I thought of asking it AGAIN (Yes some people can browse and read all they want and still ask again)

I have lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks and while I am not beating myself about it too much . I was wondering if I should move on extended induction (which I have) or move to 1st rung...I don't mind induction and I haven't gotten bored yet.

So I think question is, is 6 pounds an acceptable weightloss during an induction & should I move to OWL....
All help and any help gratefullll

Well if your not sick of the veggies and wanna lose weight a tad bit faster why not stay on it. Then when you start getting sick of it and need more variety move up the rung ladder

Congrats on your 6 pound loss. We can expect to lose 5-10% of the weight we want to lose during the 14 Day Induction....provided it is done properly. So a person with a 10 pound weight loss goal can expect to lose 1/2-1 pound, while a person with a 100 pound weight loss goal can expect to lose 5-10 pound.

You have about a 50 pound weight loss goal (if I've done my math correctly at this hour of the day. ). So you've lost little more than 10%. You've done very well!

Check the book to see what your metabolic resistance to weight loss is. Dr. Atkins wrote that the only people who may benefit from staying on Induction longer than 2 weeks are those people who have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss, because it may correct the metabolic imbalances that inhibit weight loss.

Also be aware that it is the experience of this board that staying on Induction longer than 2 weeks does not guarantee "faster" weight loss or a more consistent rate of loss. In fact, many people have learned the hard way that if they have moderate to low metabolic resistance based on the charts, if they stay in Induction too long, they hit a stall that is only broken by moving to OWL Phase.

Some people have taken this fact as meaning "stay on Induction until you hit a stall then move to OWL to break it." This is a bad idea. AGain, staying on Induction doesn't guarantee "faster" or consistent weight loss. But for those people who move to OWL Phase, they have found their weight loss is consistent and they have less "stalls" or "slow downs" additionally, they enjoy their Atkins more and, therefore, stick to the diet better than those people extending their Induction.

By the way, I just want to clarify something: extended Induction means exactly that: you are still following the Induction Rules and still eating off the Induction Acceptable Foods List. Some people believe that "extended Induction" means they can add low carb bread, pasta, etc. as long as they stay below 20 net carbs per day. That is a mistaken belief.

            Re: OWL or extended induction

Thank you for such a detailed email & it really does explain me things a bit more clearly. I've read the book but want to know 'real experiences'.

I will do another 2 weeks of clean induction with my partner who wants to start Atkins tomorrow, so another two weeks and then will climb the rung.
While I still haven't been bored with the food plan but I agree to jazz it up after a while.

I think to be honest, I am scared of moving up in the rung just incase I don't lose as much weight as on induction...I know silly me

              Re: OWL or extended induction

The first thing you add during OWL is 5 net carbs more of any Induction vegetable to your regular Induction menu.

the majority of people can eat above 20 net carbs of food daily and still lose weight. In my years here on ADBB, we've had about 5 people who could not eat more than 20 and still lose. The majority of them has some underlying medical condition that slowed their metabolisms.

CArbs aren't all bad. Good carbs are good for our bodies. And besides, if you feed your carb-phobia now, what will happen when you get to Maintenance? you can't eat Induction level carbs forever, because Induction is for weight loss, not weight maintenance. It's better to move to OWL and see what your body can do.

I was able to eat 50 net carbs daily and lose weight. The only foods I had to avoid were cantaloup (caused cravings, but no problem with weight), ricotta cheese (no cravings, but I can only eat one brand without my weight loss stopping), any dish that combined eggplant and tomato (no problem with the weight loss, but cravings were), salted nuts (no cravings, but my weight loss stopped), and wheat (no problems with weight loss, but I started wheezing whenever I ate the stuff.) Otherwise, everything else was okay for me to eat and still lose weight. Even foods I thought I could never add into my diet, like bananas, pineapple, mangoes, potatoes, pinto beans, corn, oats, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, etc.

I stayed on Induction for 4 months because I was too scared to move on. I had moderate-low metabolic resistance. I regret that decision now, because had I moved to OWL sooner, I wouldn't have been tearing my hair out on planning my menues or stressing out when I had to go to dinners or lunches. I mean, you know you're desparate when you spend a weekend figuring out how to make cauliflower taste more like potatoes! Also, my weight loss started to slow down about month 3 of extended Induction. Fortunately for me, an out of town work-related conference forced me to move to OWL. Otherwise, I would have been so carb-phobic that I would never have had the strength to move to OWL and complete my weight loss.
