  • Metamucil vs Benefiber

Okay, I understand Dr Atkins said to use psyllium husk which is found in metamucil, however, I just happen to have a bit (125 servings) of Benefiber at home.

As for ingredients it has Wheat Dextrin... that is it. Nothing else is listed... I went online and found the Metamucil nutrition facts.. So can someone who knows more about this stuff let me know if in your opinion it would be okay to use the Benefiber (atleast until I finish it)???

    Benefiber:
    Calories 15
    Sodium 0
    Total Carbs 4g
    Dietary Fiber 3g
    Soluble Fiber 3g
    Sugars 0g...
    Ingredient: Wheat dextrin

    Metamucil:
    Calories 20
    Sodium 5mg
    Total Carbs 5g
    Dietary Fiber 3g
    Soluble Fiber 2g
    Sugars 0g
    Ingrediants: Psyllium Husk, Maltodextin

    Thanks
    ~Amanda

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

If I had to chose between those two I would pick the Benefiber. Not that I like the fact that is is a wheat derivative but for sure I would not want to ingest the Maltodextrin in the Metamucil.

the dextrin in the Benefiber is similar to the maltdextrin in Metamucil.

Is it really? Then I would have to look for a third alternative. Thanks Megs

4-5 total carbs, so 1-2 net carbs.

It may have 4-5 total carbs, but look at the amount of fiber each product contains----the net carbs are essentially 0.

                Re: Metamucil vs Benefiber

                Oh about Benefiber......

When it first came out, it was hydrolyzed guar gum, a gum thickener agent. I bought and used it in experiments for thickening sauces, etc. It worked and it didn't have that slimy texture other gums had.

Then the company changed the product to wheat dextrin---because guar gum was too expensive. The concern has been what if you are sensitive to wheat. From what I recall, this product isn't on the gluten free lists for people with celiac disease. So it's something to think about if you are wheat intolerant or may have a wheat sensitivity.

Hmmm... isn't the soluble fiber part of the dietary fiber? For example, two Fiber Choice tablets (1 serving) have 4 g total carbohydrate, 4 g dietary fiber and 4 g soluble fiber.
