  • Atkins Anxiety.

    Hey all.

I'm brand new to Atkins. In fact, this is the first time I've ever been over-weight. I'm 22, a student and waitress (constantly around fried food and drunk people, ugh!), and I need to lose about 32 pounds. Anyway, I've been on induction for two days, but I feel like I've completely messed it up already.

I've used pre-shredded cheddar cheese, which I've read is coated in some sort of potato substance. I've also been drinking sugar-free iced tea which I didn't realize was caffeinated.

I realize I should read the fine print more carefully, and hopefully that's all I've been mistaken about. I'm just worried that I'm unknowingly cheating or violating the rules, and that now I'm going to gain weight! I'm wondering if I should start over? I know it's only been two days but I don't want to have to backtrack, I'm beyond ready to shed this weight!

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and share my little struggle, maybe get some input. I've been reading through the forums all day, this place seems like a wonderful and informative support system.

    Thanks!

    Hi MissHunny,

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is a learning process. Now that you know about pre-shredded cheese just don't have anymore.( I have learned to really pay attention to packaging. There are hidden sugars and fillers in alot of things that you would never suspect, even meat). I doubt that you consumed that much in two days to do any real damage. As far as caffeine goes: It's not that it's not allowed. It's just that excessive caffiene has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar. It all depends on how your body reacts to it. If it causes you cravings, don't consume it. I personally have a cup of coffee every morning. I wouldn't start over. Lesson learned and just keep going. You'll be fine. Welome to the board!!

      Welcome MissHunny
Glad to have you with us. Good luck on your journey.
And I would not worry. All of us have to go through that learning process. I did tons of mistakes when I started. Reading labels is something we did not use to do. Now I think I was crazy that I would buy stuff and not check what I was going eat or feed my family. I make sure I bring my reading glasses to the store so I do not miss the fine print.

I would also like to remind you that sugarfree is NOT the same as Atkins friendly. We have to monitor artificial sugar too. Atkins wanted us to avoid aspartame. So we do. And he said to limit artificial sugar (like Splenda or stevia) to 3 servings a day. No more.

Drink plenty of clean water. Not sugared water.

        Miss Hunny
        Welcome to Atkins DBB,
Do not stress over this, you learned something and we all have to learn. I have done Atkins several times and this time (I THINK) I am getting it right. Read and understand the rules of induction, ask questions if you are not clear. THEN do a "Clean" induction and you WILL lose weight and feel better.
I tried to do it before but not 100% by the rules and failed. These"rules" have been tested over and over and that is why Dr. Atrkins published the book. I bought the book, read the book and this website for almost two weeks to understand exactly what I was supposed to do. Then I started induction andI am feeling awesome and losing weight.
You can do, don;t stress over what happened, we all learn, just don't give up!

Thanks for the replies and encouragement. I weighed myself this morning and luckily I've still managed to lose 3lbs! However, in the future I'll be grating my own cheese and steering clear of the aspartame. I understand now it's a learning process I just wanted to get it right the first couple of days. However, I think I'm on the right track now.
