  • Discrepancy between label and fit day?

Hi~ I bought a bag of french beans and the label says 1/2 cup (4 oz yes?) is 6 carbs. I enter 1/2 cup "french beans" on fitday and it's 72 carbs!

What is going on? Please tell me to go by lable cause I love french beans.

Nope. 4 oz is 1 whole cup, not 1/2.

The ones you are looking at are "Beans, french, mature seeds, raw", which look like this:

You need "Beans, string, green, raw":

but even better is to make a custom entry in FitDay with the nutritional info from the label.

Its the way fitday sizes things. If you look on the left of your screen you can enter a "custom food". That is what I am trying to do. I can't figure out how to size things correctly..that is my big complaint about fitday. If you use the custom food it will just say "serving"...which can be anything. But since I use my dressing, salad, etc...things I normally use, I can remember the serving size. Like on fitday, my dressing says 1 serving. The reality is, one serving is 2 Tablespoons.

Does that make any sense? Someone else can probably explain it better. I am no expert at fitday.

You cannot set the serving size in tbsp, cups, oz, etc. for custom foods. What I do is write the serving size in the "Food name" entry. For example, if I enter the french beans we were talking about above, I would say "French beans (1 cup)" or "French beans (4 oz)", instead of just "French beans". This way I remember how big a serving is next time I need to input that food.

Ohhh! Thank you! Not sure why I never thought of doing that. That will make things MUCH easier. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Discrepancy between label and fit day?

Here is some info I put together regarding Fitday, that I post every now and then when the need arises. Hope it helps.

            Fitday Stuff:

If you haven't gotten Fitday to count fiber for you, this is how you do it: On the left side of the page, is a place that you can click on to set a nutrition goal. Go there, and set a fiber goal... that is done by setting a minimum and maximum daily fiber amount. It doesn't matter which numbers you plug in... I have my minimum set as 1 and my maximum as 50... the numbers there aren't important. I just put them in, to get Fitday to count for me. After doing this, the fiber grams will show with the other totals for carbs, protein, fat. Just subtract the fiber grams from the carb grams, and you have your net carbs.

Fitday sometimes frustrates me... so much so, that I have most of my foods entered as custom foods. Even a lot of veggies! It's a pain to have to sort through so many possibilities to find something that should be simple. So if I can't find something easy, I find info that I do like somewhere else and enter is as a custom food. I've gotten a lot of my info from a Spreadsheet that is located in the FAQ forum of ADBB, and some from www.calorieking.com, among others. I also sat down with my laptop in the kitchen and entered info from every jar, can, box, label, of anything that I ever use. Yep, a big pain in the butt to do that, but after it's done, it really makes Fitday easier to use.

Another thing that makes Fitday easier - when there is a recipe for something that you use a lot, you can enter the whole recipe as a custom food. This what I do to enter a completed recipe into Fitday: go to a day that has no other food entered (you can go into the next day's log). Enter all of the ingredients, and write down the total number of calories, fat, carbs, fiber, and protein on paper. You can then delete those foods, so you can go back to having a clean slate for that day. Next, go into custom foods and create a new food using the information you wrote down. It really does save a lot of time for me to be able to just click on "MUP" now, instead of having to enter the pumpkin, cream cheese, ground cinnamon, ground allspice, and almonds each time that I had it for breakfast.

Here are some links to places on the internet that you can use as a source of information for Nutrition Facts. Here we go:

The first link (Nutritional Spreadsheet) is a fantastic resourse that is found in the FAQ forum on this board. It lists each food, how much of that food equals 1 cup (in weight), the nutrition facts, and in which rung the food is allowed. I purchased a very inexpensive food scale from Walmart (about $5), and measure my cups of food by weight. I've printed this list and use it all of the time.

Calorie King is a great site for nutrition facts.

            Nutrition Data has nutrition facts.

Re: Discrepancy between label and fit day?

I can totally modify a custom food. Go into your custom food, change the name and all the values. Before you enter the edit mood, select the mearsurement you want, cup, ounce, gram etc, then enter the edit this food.
I am starting to edit all my foods to match the label on the package.

Absolutely - that is the way to go.
If I am entering something I usually customize something similar. So when I entered the salami last time I first found fitdays' salami. The chose the kind of serving size I wanted (slice) and then hit customize this item.
