  • Weird n' I need assistance !

    Hey Guys,

My doctor has just informed me yesterday that I have sever animea and I need to have more calcium in my diet, other that the calcium capsuls I take

HE asked if im on some kind of diet and I answered Atkins, he said i need to lay low on atkins these days till I get my animea level up

SO my question is, I dont really want to get off atkins, but Im worried, so can I add some things from other rungs like milk, maybe fruits

or does anyone know any other Diet i can follow just for the time being !

If your anaemic its the iron levels that are low because i am too and take tabs for it not calcium levels and if you need more calcium the diet allows cheese cream etc?
if your anaemic iron is found in many atkins approved foods (meat, liver etc).

Why are u taking calcium capsules instead of iron tablets if your anaemic? I really don't get that!

        got this from musclehack website
Want to get healthy or even lose weight? Broccoli needs to be included in your diet. Here's 10 reasons why broccoli is great!

5 Did you know broccoli contains as much calcium as a glass of milk? (ounce for ounce) Calcium helps to keep you heart beating regularly and promotes sleep

if you need more calcium make sure you eat lots of broccoli and make sure you never eat broccoli raw just cook it for atleast 2 mins

the reason why you need to cook broccoli for 2 mins is it removes the things that can damage your thyriod and really just 2 mins worth of cooking is enough just so its not super crunchy

i like to add feta cheese to my broccoli with lots of butter cook for 2 mins then add feta cook/melt another 2 mins you can add a little feta cheese once you reach Rung 2 but not during induction

I agree with sham. Here are the 2 major types of anemia from WebMD:

Iron deficiency anemia occurs because of a lack of the mineral iron in the body. Bone marrow in the center of the bone needs iron to make hemoglobin, the part of the red blood cell that transports oxygen to the body's organs. Without adequate iron, the body cannot produce enough hemoglobin for red blood cells. The result is iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia can be caused by the following:
            • An iron-poor diet, especially in infants, children, teens and vegetarians
            • The metabolic demands of pregnancy and breastfeeding that deplete a woman's iron stores
            • Menstruation
            • Frequent blood donation
            • Endurance training
            • Digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease or surgical removal of part of the stomach or small intestine
            • Certain drugs, foods, and caffeinated drinks
Vitamin deficiency anemia may occur when vitamin B-12 and folate are deficient. These two vitamins are needed to make red blood cells. Conditions leading to anemia caused by vitamin deficiency include the following:
            • Megaloblastic anemia: Vitamin B-12 or folate or both are deficient
            • Pernicious anemia: Poor vitamin B-12 absorption caused by conditions such as Crohn's disease, an intestinal parasite infection, surgical removal of part of the stomach or intestine, or infection with HIV
            • Dietary deficiency: Eating little or no meat may cause a lack vitamin B12, while overcooking or eating too few vegetables may cause a folate dificiency
            • Other causes of vitamin deficiency: pregnancy, certain medications, alcohol abuse, intestinal diseases such as tropical sprue and gluten-sensitive enteropathy (celiac disease)
Other than more severe cases which are hereditary, neither of these two types are caused by calcium deficiency.

If you are truly following Atkins, you should be getting proper iron and B-12 nutrition from what you're eating along with the recommended supplements. I would ask your doctor why he would recommend calcium with no mention of iron.

The way you phrased it it is misleading and confusing you should have written" i am anaemic and yesterday my doctor said my calcium level is low which is why i have been told to eat more food containing calcium other than taking the calcium tabs i already take".

FYI - Spinach is also a good source of calcium.

Your doctor is clearly not informed about Atkins. Those who do Atkins are usually not recommended to take multivitamins with iron exactly because many foods we are allowed to eat on this diet are iron-rich. Some of us do absorb iron poorly though, which is one of the reasons why its best to see a doctor and have a blood test done before starting Atkins. At the beginning of my Atkins I was told by my doctor to take a multivitamin with iron, but after about 2 months she told me to switch to iron-free. So, the point here is, if you have an iron deficiency, Atkins will probably help with it, not make it worse.

SO my question is, I dont really want to get off atkins, but Im worried, so can I add some things from other rungs like milk, maybe fruits

I'm a bit confused... Do you want to eat fruits and drink milk because you're worried about your calcium/iron, or do you want to have these because you'll be traveling and don't intend to stick to the rules? Because if you're just looking for iron-/calcium-rich foods, there are enough of them on the Induction acceptable foods list. Also, if you have finished your Induction, you could move to OWL and slowly add these foods back into your diet.

Did you finish your 14-day Induction?

You already take iron and calcium supplements... The laxatives may be flushing these out of your system too quickly for you to fully reap the benefits of them... There is no rule that says you have to go to the bathroom each and every day...
