  • burning body fat vs food fat

    Hi,
I' a bit confused about fat consumption and the fat we burn during induction.
We want our bodies to burn our body fat but if we consume a lot of food fat won't we burn that and not the body fat?
Why do we need a lot of fat, can you have too much?
    I don't but I am curious.
    Thanks,
    Rob

When you eat fat on induction your body stays full longer so you can burn more calories (and fat) than if you were starving yourself by not eating any fat. It's not like you are eating pounds of fat daily ....

Rob, try rereading chapter 6 "The Great Fat Meltdown". Dr Atkins explains it pretty well!

There are several reasons for it, Rob. First of all, there are fatty acids which cannot be produced in the body, so you need dietary fats for that. Dietary fats are also necessary in order to produce and balance hormones, hormones which are required in order to lose body fat. Furthermore, dietary fats are needed for optimal cell function, vitamin and mineral absorption, energy, satiety, etc. On Atkins, fat is essential for lipolysis/ketosis since it is the ratio of fats to carbohydrates that allows us to reach ketosis.

If one would change Atkins to a low fat diet by eliminating the fat but keeping the protein and carbohydrate intakes the same, then the result would be Kimkins or similar---a low calorie, low fat, low carbohydrate diet. As everyone should know by now, such a diet leads to muscle and hair loss, palpitations, anxiety attacks, thyroid and gallbladder issues, menstrual irregularities, etc.

That being said, Atkins does not allow one to gorge on fat. Yes, most of our calories should come from fat. However we should only eat when hungry (real hunger, not our brain fooling around with false hunger signals) or when 6 hours have passed since our last meal---this puts a limit on the amount of food we eat.

Thanks for the answers, it's a lot clearer now.
Haven't got to chapter 6 yet just past the 14 day induction results section.
Sure will keep going, my fat intake is not that much in weight, just more than I was used too.

What book are you reading, Rob? We go by "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" (2002) here. I'm asking because the Induction results chapter is number 12...

              Georgiana,
Same book, got my chapters mixed up with "part 3" of the book.
              I'm about 1/3rd through.
I'm still well on track, extremely carefull with what I eat (or don't) and drinking lots of water.
              Thanks, Rob
