  • Question about nuts and cheese

I was wondering what the reason is that you are only aloud an oz of cheese a day and no nuts on the induction? Surely if everything you eat is still under the 20g carb limit a day you are still safe?

You're allowed 3-4 oz of cheese per day, not one. Too much cheese is a known staller. Cheese is also "addictive" and can cause problems with constipation.

Nuts are very addictive. Many people have portion control issues and/or an intolerance to them---they trigger cravings, and/or cause stalls or slow down weight loss.

In 1992 you were allowed to make your own 20 net carbs using a carb counter, so you could have eaten nuts and seeds in Induction. From 1992 to 2002, Dr. Atkins figured out this is not what works best for most of his patients, so he changed the rules for DANDR 2002.

www.half.com or www.amazon.com you can get a copy of the 2002 DANDR (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) book for around $5.00 at either of these sites usually.

During induction you are cutting addictions from your life -- the list of acceptable foods was set up to help get rid of thos addictions. Each rung is set up to add a new food type so you find outhow your body reacts to them.

Georgiana is 100% correct (obviously). I also gathered from the book that Dr Atkins wanted to practically guarantee that everyone would have a positive experience on the scale following the 14-day Induction period so he purposely revised the diet to remove these "possible problem" foods to limit the chance of an unsatisfactory experience causing would-be Atkineers from sticking with a plan that really does work.

I'll second that on the addictive nature of nuts. I used to stock nuts as part of my zone diet plan, but invariably ended up eating way way too much. I just couldn't stop myself.
