  • Effects of going from Low Calorie to Low Carb?

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew what effect going from a low calorie diet strait to the Adkins diet would have?

I have been stalled on a low calorie diet for 2 months now. I did initially lose weight going the low cal route, but that does not work for me anymore. After doing some research I have decided to embrace the Atkins program. I am looking for an additional weight loss of 20 lbs.

Does anyone know if my coming straight off a low calorie diet will in any way affect the results of my induction period? Should I look for the same type of results I would if I had not been dieting at all.

Thanks for any help in this matter.

well you will prob gain muscle weight and quite alot of it at first so dont let that make you think your not loseing fat

and if you only got 20 pounds of fat left to lose and your comeing from a low calorie diet then it will be slow but im guessing you will gain muscle and lose fat at the same rate so the weight scale will not be much help

thats just my opinion though based from the little bit of info i got so wait for some other opinions/advice they should talk about your body currently in starvation mode and that your metabolism is really slowed down at the moment so it will take time on atkins to speed it up again

Thanks Ziggy. The metabolism issue is why I felt I needed to come over to Adkins.

I feel my body is indeed in starvation mode though I do not feel undue hunger. It is remarkable how the body can acomodate itself to what we throw at it.

You will certainly enjoy eating more on the Atkins WOE, that's for sure. Once you get into ketosis, you'll be less hungry and more satisfied with what you do eat.

I respectfully disagree with ziggy's thoughts on losing weight/gaining muscle at the same rate. Studies are pretty clear that adding muscle is very difficult and a longer process than losing fat, particularly when one loses fat through lipolysis. I cringe when I see people who say they're not losing weight and it must be because they're gaining muscle instead of losing fat, but are not doing a hardcore strength program. So, focus on getting your diet on track, then pick the exercise you're likely to stick with the most, and be consistent about it. Success is 80% diet, 20% exercise.

I was on a low calorie diet for a little shy of 1 and a half years. In that time I lost 20lbs, but I would plateu for months before seeing any changes. I soon started reading about low carbing and the benefits of it. I read many books including Atkins 2002 before finally taking the plunge. I haven't seen any negative results. I feel way better and more energized then ever before and I am smaller now then I was when I was 17 (right before I started gaining). I can even fit into the jeans I loved back then. The weight came off so much easier then low calorie.

          Thank god for Atkins...
