Re: Planning on drinking alcohol during induction

It's weird how alcohol plays a certain role in our lives. (This isn't aimed at the OP, I'm just stating the point in general.)

If I came here and posted the following, what would the reaction of the group had been?

On Saturday, my very best friends from culinary school are getting together to celebrate one of their birthdays. They're planning on each making a decadent dessert for the group to share. I'm not sure I can be rude and say I'm not interested in tasting any of them, but I don't want to mess up my induction. What do I do?
Wouldn't I be told to self-examine my choice and commitment to this WOE? Why should the answer be any different whether it's a chocolate torte or a chocolate martini?

Re: Planning on drinking alcohol during induction

I wonder if someone somewhere is posting on their low-calorie, low-fat dieting forum about having to hang out with a friend who's dad is a butcher that just slaughtered three fat pigs and plans to serve bacon and pork ribs all weekend?

Personally, whenever I go to a party or a restaurant with others drinking, I always ask for San Pelligrino with a twist of lime. Yum! No alcohol, lots of calcium, great taste, and nice looking drink.

Re: Planning on drinking alcohol during induction

i think alcohol is not allowed on induction..if you do drink. its a slip..pick up and move on with this way of life.
if you have a completely clean induction 2 weeks outside of a couple a drinks i think that is better than completely going off script for a few days.
you know try to keep slips to as little or ideally not during a clean 2 weeks of induction.

2 weeks no alcohol is not a bad ask.
It is not worth bending the rules, especially on induction.

True, but there's a big difference between a "slip" (is there really any such thing where alcohol is concerned?) and a planned off plan party night! Have your good time, then start over. If it works O.K. for you, it won't be long before you have yet another reason to "have a few," after all, it didn't hurt your weight loss the first time. But, who knows, maybe this time you'll "slip" your way right into the carb mud - and it may be a long time before you can crawl out! It's your life, after all!

Can I throw a cat amongst the pigeons.
It is by far the best choice not to drink, so you do the 'diet' as it should and get the results as they are meant...
                        BUT..
If you are anything like me, I'm around social situations quite frequently and I enjoy a drink or two. I've tried all types of 'diets/ways of eating' on and off and have always failed due to the fact that I'm doing things that are not realistic in 'my' life.
                        SO
In a nut shell, I won't succeed in something that I'm going to be miserable in, and that doesn't fit in with me. I will become bored and frustrated and when I slip of the path, I then get very angry, dissappointed and I binge.

                        Anyway.

When it comes to low carbing/atkins.. I follow everything to the book (except this) and if I do choose to have a drink (very far and inbetween), I will allow it, but go in it with control and awareness that whilst I have alcohol in my system I'm not loosing weight and that I need to be in a place with atkins friendly foods. I drink spirits that are 0carbs. with a mixer such as Diet coke. 0carbs. (you just have to weigh up which is more important, to have that drink or losse weight)

I've found that my weight loss when being strict and not drinking compared to have the 'odd' drink here and there, pretty much fairs the same in the long run. (everybody is completely different though).

Good luck with whatever you decide. We all start and finish... just what happens inbetween is the difference

Will it affect ketosis? No and yes. The liver can make ketones out of alcohol, so technically, when you drink you'll continue to produce ketones and so will remain in ketosis. The problem is ... alcohol converts more easily to ketones than fatty acids, so your liver will use the alcohol first, in preference to fat. Thus, when you drink, basically your FAT burning is put on hold until all the alcohol is out of your system.

This rapid breakdown of alcohol into ketones and acetaldehyde (the intoxicating by-product) tends to put low carbers at risk for quicker intoxication especially if no other food is consumed to slow absorption.

Because you will most likely feel like crap while drinking and especially afterwards, there is a high likelihood that you would turn to eating foods not on the induction phase or at best, consume way more calories for that day.

Net result: you've blown your first four days of Induction.

p.s. I notice from your stats that you have a fairly low body weight now so unlike people with a lot of body weight, the alcohol will probably hit you HARD.

Bottom line: You will be drunk, may get sick and all around, probably not be a very fun date.

                          Sorry to be a buzzkill.
Thanks, this answers many questions I've had for awhile now.

Please keep in mind that if you drink during induction you will not be able to gauge your rate of metabolic resistance according to the chart in the book - that chart assumes a clean induction.

Poor woman - asked for support and WOW what an ordeal, a technical over bearing grilling was most strange. Glad you had a nice party and enjoyed a drink. Hope you are still getting on OK, if you decided to continue to post…

My experience, albeit too late – every now and then I would have a shot of vodka and slim line tonic. I still lost the same, very quickly. I am on rung 9 now at 107lbs…so totally no impact for me.

                              Good luck.
