  • Benefiber on Induction

Is Benefiber allowed on Induction to keep things moving? 2 tsp serving has 4 carbs but there are 3 carbs of fiber, so that = 1 carb. The ingredient is Wheat dextrin.

I also have Walmart's "Fiber Therapy" in the house. Contains Psyllium Seed Husks. Label does not show any carbs.

What is the opinion of the "pros?"

    Thank you,

I believe Dr. Atkins recommends 1 tbsp of metamucil with a glass of water, and flax seed or bran only if constipated, correct me if im wrong.

      Thanks for your response,
And I am aware of Dr. Atkins choice of metamucil, But it has been 9 years since that book came out, and a lot of new products may have come out since then that may also be allowed. So I was hoping a moderator may be able to tell me if Benefiber or Walmart's "Fiber Therapy" may be allowed, especially since I already have them in the house. I was hoping not to have to go out and spend the extra $ if possible.

Not really. 1 tbsp per day of psyllium husks (not necessarily Metamucil), flaxseed meal or wheat bran can be taken daily as a fiber supplement even if one is not constipated. For constipation, you are allowed to take more than 1 tbsp.

Dr. Atkins recommended wheat bran, which is different from wheat dextrin. Wheat bran is the outer layer of wheat grain and is simply a by-product of milling wheat. Wheat dextrin, on the other hand, is a modified starch obtained by pyrodextrination, i.e. processing wheat starch at high temperatures in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The nutritional profiles of wheat bran and dextrin are also different.

Another difference is the resulting type of fiber. The 3 g of dietary fiber in Benefiber are soluble. But wheat bran is good source of insoluble fiber.

"Fiber Therapy" is perfectly fine to take as a fiber supplement. The active ingredient is just psyllium husks, while the rest of the ingredients are just used to make the capsules (e.g. gelatin). 6 capsules are about the equivalent of 1 tbsp of psyllium husks, so that's the maximum you can take per day.

          Thanks Georgiana,
I will just use the Fiber Therapy
