  • what have I done LOL

No dont worry I haven't cheated and don't intend to, but this morning I have booked myself on my first singles holiday (since messy divorce that I wont bore you with) over Christmas & new Year (why isn't there an open mouthed gobsmacked emoticon lol) I just feel so much better about shifting this weight! I know I have lost weigh or at least inches because my clothes are hanging differently, I was complimented on my skin yesterday & someone I haven't seen it about 3 months said "wow you have lost weight" so YAY. I will weigh myself on day 14 and know that I will see a drop of SOME sort. SOOOOO my goal now (because I have nearly 100lbs to lose) is to do an extended induction. And then off to Italy & Croatia for christmas......omg......... sorry, i said that out loud and it was a bit scary! Sorry to bore you but you really have no idea how big a deal it was for me to book it.

Anyway I have got through my "induction flu" felt awful on day 3-4 had terrible headache and AWFUL cravings but managed to not give in and hopefully will continue not to. Drinking my water is becoming second nature and I am managing on average 100 oz a day. SO to all the new people on Induction, keep going, drink your water, keep your chin up, hide the scales (do you really want an inanimate object with a dial dictate how happy or confident you feel?) and remember we are all different just because someone else loses a gazillion pounds on Induction it dosen't mean we all will xx I am so happy I found Atkins & this board!

Remember, never let your KArma run over your Dogma.

    Congrats on your loss.

May I make a suggestion? If you are losing inches, you are losing fat (Dr. ATkins wrote that the loss of inches was a better indicator of fat loss than pounds lost.)

Since you are going on a trip in 3-4 months, you might want to consider moving to OWL Phase, rather than doing "extended" Induction. All "extended" Induction means is that you continue Induction: so you follow the Induction rules and eat only those foods on the Induction Acceptable Foods List. I'm saying this because some folks have the idea at "extended" Induction means you can add non-Induction foods and/or eat more than 20 net carbs daily.

There's also an unfounded fear that if you move to OWL, your weight loss will come to a grinding halt. That's not true. The weight loss might slow down, meaning you might only lose 3 pounds rather than 3.5 pounds.

And there's the reality we've experienced here on ADBB: the people who have average to low metabolic resistance to weight loss and who do an "Extended" Induction hit a plateau that is only broken when they move on. Some people have taken that to mean "stay on Induction until you hit that plateau then move to OWL". That's not the best idea because there is a tendency to become carb-phobic if you stay on Induction.

You'll see that here on ADBB that there are people who are deathly afraid if they eat 3 carbs more than their Induction level carbs, they will not only stop their weight loss, they'll also gain all their weight back. That is irrational. Especially when some of these folks don't have any quams about adding Atkins bars and shakes or low carb snacks that contain 20 grams of sugar alcohols/glycerin/polydextrose/etc., but are too frightened to add 5 net carbs of green beans.

If you move to OWL Phase now or in a week, by the time you embark on your trip you will have gone high enough on the OWL CArb LAdder to know what your CCLL is and to be able to legally eat non-Induction foods like fruits, legumes, starchy veggies and perhaps even grains. That will make your menu planning alot easier on your trip and you won't have any excuses that "you had to cheat because there wasn't anything Induction friendly for you to eat."

      Hi Notolate and thanks

That does seem like a good idea but don't I have to wait to see how resistant I am on induction before moving on or not? I just want to do the best for me and your point about it giving me more choices whilst away is a good one. So, providing I continue to lose weight on OWL am I right in thinking that technically the final rung- whole grains- would only be 9 weeks away? or am I jumping the gun?

Re: what have I done LOL

It would be more than 9 weeks, the rungs aren't a week each, each food you add on a rung is a week. I think that is the best reason to move on to OWL right after the 2 week induction. I spent 4 weeks on Rung 2, 3 on rung 3, and am moving on to Rung 4 soon, which I expect to take 5 weeks.
For example, on Rung 3, I added peanuts (peanut butter), almonds, cashews - 3 foods at 1 week each I want to climb the rungs and add foods asap for 3 reasons:
        1) I am re-training my brain to eat healthy - this takes time! I am trying to break 30 years of poor eating habits, I need time to learn what I can and can't eat
        2) I want to add new foods and evaluate them before I get too close to goal (where weight loss usually slows) so that I can tell if a food is adversely affecting my weight losses. If I'm close to goal, if I don't lose the week I add a new food, I may not be able to tell if this is because of the new food, or because my body chose not to lose that week because the weight loss has slowed so much.
        3) I love food. I love GOOD food. I don't want to get bored/discouraged because of limited food choices. I'll give up sugar, etc, but there is no NEED to give up nuts, fruit, dairy, etc long term. Each time I add a food, I increase the variety of choices I have and increase my chances of sticking with this forever

That's my 2 cents on climbing the rungs vs extended induction

PS - I spent an extra few weeks (3 or 4 weeks) on OWL rung 1, since I do have a lot to lose (call it extended Rung 1 if you wish). I plan to do the same at Rung 4, since I am in no real hurry to add alcohol (don't miss it much, don't want to pause my fat losses while I burn alcohol for fuel). I will continue through the remaining rungs, I'll just pause for a few weeks at Rung 4.

          Hi Julieb

So how much are you losing each week? im not asking as a comparison, more of an example because obviously OWL is less restrictive, everyone will be eating different things, for eg I personally wouldn't trust myself with peanut butter I do miss fruit though and it will be great to be able to add that back in.
