  • Diet Red-Bull?

I am on day 7 of my induction. I tested with ketostix yesterday and i saw the strip turning dark pink suggesting i am indeed in Ketosis. However, i drank 2 diet red bull yesterday. Today morning i am not testing positive for ketosis. Do u think diet red bull kicked me out of ketosis?

Any suggestion will be much appreciated.

    Re: Diet Red-Bull?

Can you list the ingredients in it? I looked online and could not find them listed.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

      Re: Diet Red-Bull?

These are the ingredients in SF Red Bull:
carbonated water, sodium citrate, taurine, glucuronolactone, caffeine, acesulfame k, aspartame, inositol, xanthan gum, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hcl, vitamin b12, artificial flavors, colors
There was a study done in the early 1990s suggesting that citric acid could affect ketosis by accelerating gluconeogenesis (i.e. the production of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, such as fat and protein). I imagine sodium citrate (a salt of citric acid) can have the same effect. However, the subjects in the study tested for urinary ketones using ketostix. Ketostix are sensitive only to acetoacetone though (acetoacetone is one of the three ketones the body makes) and only measure the excess of it that is spilled over into the urine. But in the body, acetoacetone can be converted to acetyl CoA and used for energy, or it can react to form any of the two other ketones: beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone. So, simply because you have no excess acetoacetate left over to pee, it does not mean you are out of ketosis, because the other two kind of ketones might still be present and used for energy.

Caffeine can affect your blood sugar (this does not necessarily mean cravings; check the list of possible symptoms on pp. 150-151 of DANDR 2002) and, for some people, it interferes with weight loss.

SF Red Bull also uses two different sweeteners: ace-K and aspartame. Consuming a variety of sweeteners can work against you and mess up your weight loss, because it's not uncommon to have an intolerance to some sweeteners. We are told in DANDR we should find the sweetener that works for us, but if you try a bunch of them, it will be impossible to know how a particular sweetener affects your blood sugar and/or your weight loss. Dr. Atkins observed some of his stalled patients were stalled by aspartame-sweetened diet drinks and he blamed this on aspartame, which is why aspartame is not one of the recommended sweeteners in DANDR 2002.
