  • Induction HELP? Got lots of questions? :)

    Hi Everyone,

Im planning to start Induction in the next week or so, after hubby's birthday, coz I know there will be lots of chocolate cake and I dont want to spoil induction so I will be starting right after his B-day.

I have the Atkins book, and plan to follow the Induction 2 week menu plan in the book. I notice that you are allowed a slice of Atkins bread here and there, chocolate mudslides for a snack, atkins muffins etc.

I am currently in South Africa, where they do sell Atkins books, but do not sell one atkins product, nope not one, sux.

So I have done some research, and found Atkins bread, muffin and pancake recepe's which Im gonna have to make myself.

However, in the book it does not advise you on what to drink. I love Coffee/Tea with milk and sweetner, therefore, my questions are as follows:

    1. Can I drink Coffe/Tea and bit of milk and sweetners on Induction? Cant bear to cut coffee out.

    2. I drink a lot of water already so thats not a problem, but could I also drink Coke Zero for example and Fanta Zero?

    3. Does anyone have an induction 14-day meal plan to follow or should i follow the one in the book, as mentioned above, it says u can have atkins bread here and there with meals, mudslide, one day atkins muffin, one day atkins chocolate, one day atkins shake etc...(its in the Atkins induction section in the book)

    4. Am I allowed salt/pepper/ herbs, vinegar?

    5. what vitamins should i take?

    6. How much of protein can you actually eat with your meals? Example how many eggs? How many lamb chops etc.

    7. Can i use milk in my coffee

    8. What about White yoghurt, that contributes to weight loss, so am i allowed white yoghurt at all on this diet?

    9. I think we only have two types of sweetners here, sweetex and canderal which could i use in coffee/tea?

    10. Are we allowed any herbal teas, in South Africa we have a tea which is grown in the mountains caleld 'rooi bos' it has more antioxidants and ten times healthier than green tea and nicer too, would that be allowed, i know they sell it in England, SA exports it there, not sure if u get it in the usa/canada, but its wonderful, anyway are any herbal teas allowed, like rooibos(red bush tea), green tea, chamomile, chai tea?

I have a lot more questions hmmm cant think of them now lol, but please do let me know, any advice would be greatly appreciated, this is it for now.

Any help would really be appreciated, thank you

Re: Induction HELP? Got lots of questions?

As I mentioned in the post in Spotlight. You do not have the right book dear. It will be important to get the Dr.Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) book. It will be a great help for you and steer you away from pancakes and god knows what towards whole foods. So NO pancakes, bread and muffins on induction. But later on you can try these things out

OK the book would answer some of your questions for sure. Also make sure you read the stickies in this forum and the posts in the FAQ forum. Lots of help there.

    1. Can I drink Coffe/Tea and bit of milk and sweetners on Induction? Cant bear to cut coffee out.
Dr atkins recommend trying to cut coffee and replace it with decaf. Try a gradual change over. Milk is a no on induction but cream is allowed. Sweeteners are allowed but not aspartame. Be careful with sweeteners though and use only totally 3 a day

    2. I drink a lot of water already so thats not a problem, but could I also drink Coke Zero for example and Fanta Zero?
Not if they have Aspartame. Not if they make you go over your sweetener limit a day. Do you really need this much coffeine???

Use the allowed list and create your own basic meals. I am doing induction right now. You can check my journal for what I eat. But I like it simple and sparse. You may be different.

Here are some threads in our FAQ that will help you.
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What are the Rules of Induction?)
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)

Here is a good webpage to look at
Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Home

Also check out this thread with induction recipes.
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...n-recipes.html (Never ending induction recipes) (Never ending induction recipes)

    4. Am I allowed salt/pepper/ herbs, vinegar?
Yes. Again the allowed list makes this clear

    5. what vitamins should i take?
A basic multimineral/vit tablet of good quality is great. Look for one without iron. As we get a lot of iron when on Atkins.

    6. How much of protein can you actually eat with your meals? Example how many eggs? How many lamb chops etc.
Eat till you are satisfied. No more. There is no limit. There will be indvidual choices. But one of things we aim for is learning how to eat.

    7. Can i use milk in my coffee
No milk is not on the allowed list. We do not eat ANYTHING that is not of the list. Cream is allowed

    8. What about White yoghurt, that contributes to weight loss, so am i allowed white yoghurt at all on this diet?
No yogurt is not on the allowed list. We do not eat ANYTHING that is not of the list. But once you start to add in other foods later you can have yogurt

    9. I think we only have two types of sweetners here, sweetex and canderal which could i use in coffee/tea?
What are the main sweetener in your sweetner. If it is aspartame find a differnt one

Teas are allowed. Just do not make them an excuse for having more sweetener.

I hope that helps. Good luck on your planning and on your journey. You're doing the right thing. Figuring things our and getting ready

On this board, we follow Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002ed. The book you are referring to was published after Dr. Atkins death by a corporation that makes its money selling "Atkins" brand products such as bars & shakes.

I am currently in South Africa, where they do sell Atkins books, but do not sell one atkins product, nope not one, sux.

So I have done some research, and found Atkins bread, muffin and pancake recepe's which Im gonna have to make myself.
Bread, muffins and pancakes aren't allowed until the appropriate rung of the Ongoing Weight Loss(OWL) of the diet. Atkins products cause a lot of people to stall in their weight loss, and we do not recommend their use on this board.

However, in the book it does not advise you on what to drink. I love Coffee/Tea with milk and sweetner, therefore, my questions are as follows:
DANDR says to drink 64oz MINIMUM of pure water, with nothing added.

      1. Can I drink Coffe/Tea and bit of milk and sweetners on Induction? Cant bear to cut coffee out.
Decaf coffee is allowed, if you drink your minimum required water. Sweeteners that don't contain aspertame, such as splenda, are allowed, but only 3/day.

      2. I drink a lot of water already so thats not a problem, but could I also drink Coke Zero for example and Fanta Zero?
      Pop without aspertame is OK.

We recommend that you look over the list of foods acceptable for induction and pick the foods you like

      4. Am I allowed salt/pepper/ herbs, vinegar?
Yes, but count the carbs in herbs and spices. Plain vinegar is OK, some "fancy" vinegars have sugar added and are not allowed.

      5. what vitamins should i take?
      A multi-vitamin without iron.

      6. How much of protein can you actually eat with your meals? Example how many eggs? How many lamb chops etc.
Only as much as you need to not feel hungry anymore. Your body will tell you.

      7. Can i use milk in my coffee
Milk is not allowed until OWL Rung 2. Use heavy (whipping) cream.

      8. What about White yoghurt, that contributes to weight loss, so am i allowed white yoghurt at all on this diet?
Yoghurt is not allowed until OWL Rung 2.

      9. I think we only have two types of sweetners here, sweetex and canderal which could i use in coffee/tea?
The list of sweeteners allowed is in DANDR. I'm not sure what those are made of so cannot answer. It should say on the package what they are made of (i.e. aspertame, saccherine, etc)

Yes, decaf teas and herbal teas are allowed.

I have a lot more questions hmmm cant think of them now lol, but please do let me know, any advice would be greatly appreciated, this is it for now.

Any help would really be appreciated, thank you

How many eggs are you allowed a day on induction, example if i have eggs for breakfast, would i be allowed to have one at dinner time.
Does anyone have a two week meal plan to follow for Induction.
Does the Atkins book you recommended have a two week induction menu plan.
I know we can come up with our own meals for induction with the acceptable food list but Id prefer to follow a two week meal plan so I dont mess up, just to start me off correctly.

Re: Induction HELP? Got lots of questions?

              Hi
Here is a copy of a post I made a while back that might give you some ideas for planning your menus
Here are some of the dishes/foods I ate on induction - but you might not like or have the ingredients, so try to work out something similar, using it as a guide.

I havent mentioned quantities but bear in mind the cheese 'allowance' of 3-4 ounces and that we can have up to 3 cups of vegetables from the 2 lists.

Also that we ought to be getting 'most' of our carbs from our veggies, so choose those with more carbs than plain old lettuce unless you dont intend to eat cheese, eggs or cream which all have carbs!!

              Breakfast:
Meat & cream cheese rollups plus some cherry tomatoes
Slices of red pepper rolled in meat and gouda cheese slices
A slice or two of crustless quiche made from eggs/cheese/cream/cooked meat/cooked veg Revolution Rolls (recipe in the 14 day induction forum) spread with butter and Marmite or cream cheese

              Lunch(usually at a local cafe):
Eggs, bacon & mushrooms plus tomatoes if I havent had them for breakfast
Roast Chicken (skin on) with broccolli/green beans/cauliflower - with a pat of butter melted over them
Pork chops with similar veg or a salad/mayo
Green salad with chopped pieces of chicken & bacon thrown over it plus mayo

              Supper:
Crustless quiche as for breakfast but with a side salad of red peppers/mushrooms/chopped celery + mayo
Cauliflower in a rich cheese sauce (melt 2 ounces of grated cheese, one fluid ounce of cream and 1/2 ounce of cream cheese together)
Chicken curry served over caulirice (grated raw cauliflower microwaved till softish)
Hamburger 'pie' with some salad stuff
              Chicken drumsticks with mashed turnips/butter

              Snacks if needed:
              Meat/cheese rollups
Celery stuffed with cream cheese or pate
Chopped celery in mayo - sometimes with added psyllium husk if I felt the need for more fibre
              Piece of quiche
Hard boiled eggs - mix mayo and mustard/paprika etc into the yolks to make devilled eggs if you like them more spicy
Leftover anything (I always cooked more than the one meal's worth of most dishes to make sure there were leftovers available).

Always plan in advance so you have food available when you feel hungry so you won't be tempted to eat off-plan because you have nothing suitable ready to grab.

I hope this helps and gives you some idea of what can be done - but adapt it to your own taste - don't eat something you don't like just because I have listed it here
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

No limits on eggs. On induction I eat sometimes 5 - if it is one of those days. Eggs have carbs and you need to count them

You've got a lot of great advice/suggestions here. Just wanted to comment that I drink blueberry rooibos now that I'm on the berry rung (OWL level 4). The regular rooibos (red bush) is fine for Induction and after. Tasty stuff!

Sweetex tablets are saccharin which is OK; canderal is aspartame which is not allow according to DANDR 2002 so I would not have that. The suggested artificial sweetener is Splenda (sucralose) so I would try and find that.
