This is how its made the most sense in my mind:

Our caveman bodies are used to burning fats. It's what its happy doing, and up untill the past couple of decades, thats what it was doing. Then major carbs came in and took over the majority of our eating habits.

So we eat fats and carbs and bodies just don't know what to do, so they store the fat so that they can burn the carbs. Since we don't stop eating the carbs, the body can never burn the fat.

When we deny our bodies the carbs, not all of course, it has no choice but to switch to burning fat for energy. Since its burning our stored fat, we lose weight!

And whats wrong with burning stored fat? NOTHING!!

Remind your father that it's not all just meats, cheese, fats, butter, & oils. We get our carbs primarly from vegetables. It's not a no carb diet, but a low carb one. Plus there are 4 stages, not just 1. During the later stages we can add on berries, WHOLE grains, beans, some of us can even have a glass of wine every once in a while.

This way of life has us eating whole foods, instead of processed ones. No sugar, no refined flour, nothing thats bad for our caveman bodies.

From one neanderthal to another, I hope this helps your father understand this WOL

      Hi George

      Welcome Gillybabys Dad :wave

You have a beautiful daughter! She offers a great deal of support
and encouragement to other people on this forum and you should
be proud of her for volunteering her time to such a worthwhile cause.

She has her heart in the right place. :yes

I also have to say that in my opinion your weight and what you eat is not her business. But I'm sure her desire to educate you is motivated by love. If she wants to influence you, leading by example, of course is the way to do it.

      ha

That being said I'm still going to be a cheerleader for Atkins.
Let me just say that I'm a newbie and not an expert and there
are wiser people here on this forum than I. I'm new. But I'm
      an enthusiast. :joy

I have been on Atkins since February 1st.

Not a long time, but the results for me with Atkins were quick and profound. I'm in permanent ketosis and I am losing weight and I
never experienced any negative side effects at all.

I have no doubt that I will eventually reach my goal. You don't know
how wonderful it is to say this after so many years of hopelessness.

In a former life I was a major carb addict. Bread, Potatos, Brownies, Potato Chips. Any kind of fast food junk you can imagine. I was overweight my whole life. A constant binger and compulsive eater, I could never turn any kind of junky food away.

Since sticking to Atkins I have amazing control over my former impulses.
      :guns

I no longer crave or desire the frankenfoods that had harmed my body so badly. I know they harmed me because I gained weight on them and I couldn't eat enough of them. It was a dreadful addiction that I never dreamed I would be free of. I felt desperate.

But then I found this forum, I took Atkins to heart, and I vowed to see it through. I told myself back then that I would stick it out 6 months, and then evaluate if it was working for me. Now I know I will be sticking to it for life.

I think Atkins works for me because I EAT! I love to eat. I never deprive myself. I eat my favorite foods all the time. Which doesn't mean I haven't added new favorite foods. I never used to eat fish. Now it is a daily staple. Before Atkins, if I had been offerred a chocolate donut or a piece of salmon, I would have taken the donut. Now I would take the salmon. That is how big a change I have made.

I stick to meat, eggs, fish, lots of fish, cheese and veggies. I don't even crave the crap anymore so it isn't a problem staying away from it. My palate and my taste buds have permanently changed.

I can tell you that this lifestyle is worth embracing. But you have to give it a serious effort. No trying it for 3 days and giving up. You must stay on it for at least 6 months and tally up the progress. I see many people here toy with it, But it is a permanent lifestyle and not a quickie fad diet. It is a journey. There are many physical, emotional and spiritual changes to be made along the way. But they are worthwhile changes.

It has been pretty amazing to discover who I am without the crazy carbaholic behavior. I look in the mirror and see curves. All my pants are hanging lose. I will soon have to buy a new pair of jeans. My old jeans are falling off me. I'm losing inches. I have a spring in my step.
      I have hope.

I just treat myself so much better now. I never, ever go hungry.

I used to skip meals. Now I eat a full breakfast every morning. I love cooking my eggs with a pat of butter. I love a nice steak or pork chop and I even eat the yummy fat without having a second of guilt about it. I eat 6 pieces of bacon without batting an eye. I dip my crab in butter. I put a tablespoon of luscious cream in my decaf. I melt cheese over my burger. I cut up small pieces of jicama, turnips, radishes, pepper and eat them like they were chips. I like the richest of fishes. I'm having fun.

There are just so many benefits. I can't praise this lifestyle enough.
So thats my spill. And I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. Some people here have lost hundreds of pounds. I've lost 22. If you love to eat - if you want to lose weight without the hunger, Atkins is the way to go.

I would strongly suggest you allow your father to read Dr Atkins book DR ATKINS' NEW DIET REVOLUTION and learn about how our bodies will burn fats as fuel given the absence of carbohydrates and how fats can cause our body to have less of a percieved need to eat through the appetite decrease of ketosis, the blood sugar levels stabilization and the increase in calorie burning of the process of getting the fats and proteins digested as opposed to the carbs.

        Happy low carbing.
